Today would be the great day, humanity's possible last hope for survival, a hope focused on the idea of leaving a genetic legacy, rather than escaping the condemnation of those who inhabited today's dying planet.
The one hundred and fifty colonizing ships will leave on their way to their uncertain destiny, each one leading to planetary systems that appear to be promising, hoping to sing with the luck of finding worlds that meet sufficient conditions to be inhabitable or at least terraformable in a period of time less than 100 years.
It was like throwing a dart in a dark room and achieve with it, nail a fly to the wall, without even knowing that it is there. One hundred and fifty darts would be thrown today, each one fucked with what is humanity's most valuable treasure, its seed, as well as that of all life forms that could and should have been collected.
The genetic inheritance of ten thousand humans of both sexes would be in each one of the ships, product of the selection made by a complex algorithm that evaluated characteristics such as ethnicity, predisposition to diseases, genetic variety, physical and intellectual conditions, and countless other attributes, which were sought in the ignorant, even close parents, of the future of humanity.
Each one of the embryos was cloned, until completing the loading of each one of the ships, identical in structure and load, they only differed in their names and destinies; Orpheus, Eurydice, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Perseus, Andromeda, Pandora, Artemis, Beaver, Pollux and other one hundred and forty, formed the fleet. Each one directed to a different destiny, within a sphere of five hundred light years of radius, measured from the earth, one hundred and fifty flies to hit blindly.
The five million inhabitants of the planet had focused their hopes on this trip, many of them counting on the fact that at some point a message would be received from somewhere in the galaxy, warning that a new home awaited them, what many of these people did not know, ignorant of what space travel meant, was that this message, if it arrived, would take at least five thousand years to be received.
Today the Pegasus space station, ten years after its completion, would finally see its main objective completed and at the same time its empty hangars, leaving space for the construction of the ships that would transport humans to the colonies of Mars, Europe and Titan, gigantic cargo ships where humans would leave the Earth, on their way to an uncertain destination.
On the first day of the fifth month of the year 1590 after the great catastrophe, in the middle of an unprecedented celebration, since the announcement of the complete atmospheric cleanliness; the advanced colonizing ships left to their destiny, in search of a restart for humanity.
What those who celebrated and centered their hope on them did not know today is that, in effect, they transported the future of humanity, because by the time one of them reached its destination, it would hit the fly on the wall; there would be no place to call, to inform that the objective would have been achieved.
