—Todos los filtros del círculo polar ártico ya han fallado, esta mañana colapso el último, no resistieron la carga de trabajo —dijo Eleazar, de pie frente al sensor del sistema de teleconferencia. Se encontraba a bordo de una plataforma oceánica, encargada del control de los sistemas de filtrado atmosféricos, situada a miles de kilómetros al norte del continente.
—Gracias doctor Barreto, por favor díganos si considera necesario abandonar ya la plataforma — pregunto el doctor Marcelo Pereira, director de la Fundación Oceanográfica, ante la proyección de un claramente extenuado y desaseado Eleazar.
—No lo considero necesario, de momento, los vientos árticos aun mantienen alejados de nosotros los agentes tóxicos y los filtros localizados en esta latitud, aun funcionan a toda su capacidad, creo que aun tenemos unos tres o cuatro meses antes de que estemos en verdadero riesgo, de todas formas, estamos esperando por los datos de los satélites de monitoreo atmosféricos que tienen orbitas polares, para saber con precisión la evolución de la situación —respondió Eleazar.
—Por favor manténganos informados y si es necesario, realice de inmediato la evacuación, sin esperar por nuestra aprobación…
—Doctor Pereira, lo que me tiene más preocupado es que las últimas fotografías recibidas de los satélites, mostraban un acelerado deshielo oceánico y glacial, al norte del continente hundido, al parecer nuestras estimaciones del calentamiento de esa zona del globo fueron muy optimistas. Parte de las tierras congeladas empiezan a mostrar vegetación herbácea —dijo, mientras simultáneamente se transmitían imágenes satelitales, en las que se podían ver varias zonas donde crecían verdes pastos, en medio de la capa de hielo en la zona norte del continente donde había ocurrido unos 1500 años antes, la gran catástrofe.
—A ese paso, el incremento del nivel del mar podría empezar a afectar a las ciudades costeras en los próximos diez años —continuó Eleazar —. Muy probablemente las zonas costeras de ciudades como Polis deberán ser evacuadas en los próximos años…
—Gracias Dr. Barreto, debemos retirarnos ahora —interrumpió Marcelo, para luego interrumpir la comunicación con Eleazar —. Bien ya escucharon el reporte de Barreto, no hay cambió en la situación, el fenómeno sigue su avance como se tenía previsto, es imperante que se acelere la adecuación, de las colonias de Marte y Titán, y que se inicie la de Europa, dijo ante una sala vacía, en medio de la cual sólo se encontraba el visor de un dispositivo de teleconferencia.
—Estamos trabajando en eso con la mayor premura, tan pronto como esté operativo el ascensor, todo será más rápido, pero por el momento estamos sujetos a operar con los transbordadores y sólo podemos hacer diez lanzamientos al día — dijo Rommel Dietrich, director de la agencia espacial —. El ascensor debería estar operativo en unas dos semanas, no quiero que las cosas se hagan apresuradamente, ya sufrimos un accidente donde fallecieron tres ingenieros y un piloto, eso retraso el cronograma al menos un mes.
—Gracias por su reporte de la situación atmosférica doctor Pereira y también a usted doctor Dietrich por explicar los avances con el ascensor, debemos pensar ahora en lo referente a la evacuación de las zonas que se verán afectadas por el incremento del nivel del mar —dijo Raul Friedman, director del comité nombrado por el triunvirato para planificar y coordinar el éxodo.
Las naves colonizadoras ya estaban terminadas y a la espera de su valioso cargamento en la estación espacial Pegasus, y en los próximos meses empezarían a ser enviados los primeros colonos a Marte y Titán, ya estaba próximo el inicio del abandono masivo de la tierra, una vez que la colonia de Marte estuviese adecuada, iniciaría la evacuación.
