Steem Basic Income Giveaway (You say what???)

in #contest5 years ago

Nice array of socks and all the things that you all want in your perfect sock... you are all a little strange... only requiring exactly the perfect sock for all occasions.....

This week, I had seen something completely hilarious... someone had written a thing about how they had heard the quote "Knowledge is Power - Francis Bacon" as a child.... and how they had always thought (until recently) that people were saying, "Knowledge is Power, France is Bacon"!... and for years had wondered what the cryptic connection between the two things was....

Anyway, this has led me to thinking about the many things that we've heard, either as a child... or as an adult... that we've completely misunderstood... but never realised until later!

My Question

  1. What is something that you've misheard... and not realised until much later that you've completely missed the point?

My sample answer

Unsplash

When I was a kid... I remember quite distinctly that my mother would go around telling people that she would give them a ring... I thought it was a touch curious that my mum would be going around handing out rings to friends and acquaintances... but hey, I'm a kid and what do I know?

Many years later (thankfully, not toooo many years later)... I figured out that it was just a figure of speech that just referred to her giving them a call on the phone...

... can you imagine how weird I thought it was when she sometimes said that she would give them a "tinkle"?

Rules

  2. Resteem is NOT necessary!
  3. In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!

  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!
  6. PLEASE PLEASE Don’t upvote your OWN comment. I can’t stop you doing it, but it seems to mess up the distribution of the Bounty for everyone else. If you upvote your own comment, I will consider it an invalid entry when doing the draw.

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

Last week's winners

The last post paid out 1.28 SBD and 0 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 3 shares.

The winners by random draw are:

@roselifecoach

@vibesforlife

@n1hal

Haha good one @bengy this was only for a sort while but I thought of it, you know how we mark the year BC or AC wellll... when I was much younger my sister used to talk alot about Madonna the singer and then I heard of "pre-Madonna' instead of 'prima donna' I quickly thought people were talking about an age before Madonna LOL.

HEHE!!!! That is absolutely hilarious! I had no idea she was THAT much of an iconic figure!

I don't have one that I remember myself, but my friend recently misheard something I said and it was pretty funny. I don't remember the exact words, but I'll try and recreate the mood.

We were discussing something that we were planning on doing and at the end of one of the ideas, i added "maybe" because I didn't know if I wanted to do it or not. He heard it as "baby" and we sprang out into a 15 minute conversation on whether or not "maybe" can be misheard as "baby" in the context I said it.

Haha.. I have these conversations with my wife all the time... she will literally take the meaning of something that she hears.. even if it is completely nonsensical to do with the context! ... adn then we have a similar conversation to what you are describing, with me saying how is it possible that that even makes sense!

I love that kids wander around with such strange thoughts in their heads! When i was little I thought imagination was "mate believe" instead of "make believe" because it was something you did with your friends.
E x

Haha... that's cute... but also true... you only let your guard down to do that with friends!

Not really a mishearing, but a misunderstanding for sure. When I was a younger child, I heard an older kid call someone a dildo. Like: “you dildo!!!” Being the highly intelligent young kid that I was, I surmised that dildo was another word for dodo.

My siblings and I promptly started using the word profusely. “Your a dildo!” No YOUR a dildo. Well you’re a dildohead!! Well you’re a big fat dildohead!! And so on. This was really one of our favorite insults.

This went on for some time. At some point (I’m not exactly sure how) I discivered the true meaning of the word. Imagine my surprise!! Needless to say, I informed the siblings and we quickly ceased using it.

To this day, I still don’t know why my parents never stopped us from using it. I know they heard it and said nothing.

Haha... I can just imagine your parents just cringing... and hoping that no one would notice in public!

Haha!! I am sure they did :-)

I would never do that with my kids, if anything they probably think they get too much information at times.

I just read a comment mishearing a song above and it got me. This happens to me often and it happened lately.

Based on what I first heard, I have been singing

"You gat something on your money, say that shit" whereas I needed to replace money with mind :)

PS: this is an extract from BLEED by Young M.A

Haha... hope you never sang that out loud at a karaoke!

Burlesque!

This wasn't when I was a kid though, but otherwise fits.

I was working on someone's computer at work, and she was having a conversation with another woman about something. There other woman said multiple times that such and such was "so burlesque". Being a word not commonly part of my vernacular, I googled it to see what it meant. This was my result.

I read the first definition and thought (out loud) "Huh...I think I would like burlesque."

"I bet you would like it," replied the second woman accusatively. And then she went on her way.

What was she accusing me of? So I looked back at my phone and read the second definition. Very different from the first! But she was already gone, so I couldn't show her how this little confusion came about. I still laugh about it though.

Hahaa!!!! That's the funniest thing... and so awkward when you say it so naively, and then only realise afterwards what it is!

Ever misheard a song's lyrics? It happens often to me.

I listened to Marilyn Manson for quite a while and still do. Anyway, in one of his songs he sang the beat of a meatball which later I discovered was actually "the beautiful people"

What makes it even more hilarious is that "The Beautiful People" is the song's title as well.

Hahaha that's probably one of the best mishears I've ever heard! Can't wait to hear that song again now

The german word 'Rechtsanwalt' means 'lawyer'. 'Rechts' translates to 'right' and is the opposite of 'Links' which means 'left'. Confused the heck out of me why there is no such thing as a 'Linksanwalt' until I realised that 'Recht' actually stands for the word 'law'.

Furthermore the study of law is called 'Jura' which comes from the latin word for 'law' but also means 'jurassic'. Took me a long time to figure out that those people are not studying dinosaurs.

HAHA! Dinosaurs! That would have been completely confusing for quite some time!

Hahahaha nice one sir @bengy! Sorry i had to laugh at your answer..

Well speaking of kid's beliefs, I was made to believe that every time you say a lie your nose will grow. Well that was what my bully cousin used to tell me. So it was hard telling a lie for I am always conscious of it. I kept touching my nose each time. So now my family knows if I am telling d truth or not. When im touching my nose, its always a lie. Unfortunately, it had became a habit I cant shake it off.. tsk!

Posted using Partiko Android

Haha... that's so funny that it has been so ingrained that you still carry the habit with you in adulthood!
