Freewrite Day 553 System

One of my strengths as an accountant is to be able to see and understand systems. I’m very good at the big picture. I’m not too interested in the fine details. This makes me good at figuring out a mess. I need to sort things – somehow – before I can look at them. Numerical order works well often. If you can fix the top 20% of the numbers, most of the rest will fall into line.

In many places I worked, all I needed to do to get started was get some numbers they had and sort them into numerical order, and show them to the boss. The boss would say, “I had no idea that number was so high!” or “That number should be much bigger.” Then I could dig into that segment to see what was going on. That led to >>> more sorting of numbers! Joy, joy, joy!

Just by doing this simple “system analysis” Many secrets could be found. The people in a department of one place were working unpaid, unauthorized, and unknown overtime to “make it work.” This is how their costs were so much lower than other similar parts of the operation. At another place I worked, the large and numerous "maintenance costs" were going to remodel the home of one of the managers, who was fired soon after that was found out.

Boom! People think you are a genius and all you did was sort things out.

Over the years I met other accountants like me. We get great satisfaction when we understand complicated things. Most of us don’t look at the tiny numbers, we are looking at totals to see patterns.

If there is no pattern, there is no system. I have never seen that. The system is there somewhere, I just need to find it. I do not care what services you provide, or what widgets you produce. I only care about the patterns of money flow which will let me help you do what you do more efficiently.

If you do 20 things – which cost more? Which cost less? Which generated revenue? Which caused loss?

When people think accounting is boring, they have no idea what they are talking about. It was a very fun job for me :)
