Do you code? Steemit needs a Discord Server Directory. Here is why...

I'm on a lot of Discord Servers. I use the app a lot as part of eCom and Gaming communities. When I (re)joined Steemit, I was happy to discover that there's a lot of Discord Servers being used by groups on the platform. I was even more excited when I read a post by Scott Business with an updated list of Steem related servers. So, I got to joining!

Then...

Huh? No way.

Click after click, error. "The instant invite is invalid or expired."

Wait, no it's not. 😐

Luckily, Scott is the best.

What's Really Happening?

I MASS-TWEET the "team" because I'm annoying like that and mass tweet.

We spring into action.

4:17 a.m. EST

Discord only allows you to join 100 servers.

Discord's ERRORS are vague and misleading.

What did I learn?

I must delete a server to join another.

That is listed in their help documents. Where it's misleading is that the error says something untrue because the link is not expired.

This is fair, except, there are over 100 Steemit related servers using Discord.

Do Steemians know this happens? Do Steemian discord admins know?

And, many of us use Discord for other things as well. For instance, gaming.

And yes, yes, I want to join them all.

Alas, I can't. At least not simultaneously. And that's fine. I'll fire up my trusty spreadsheet and keep a list. There are always bookmarks.

But there's already a list, Scott's list. Well yes. However, while I think it's great that he updated the list; it's not only a lot of work but it's never going to be exhaustive and constantly updating.

New servers are added all the time.

That might change when communities become a thing on Steemit, but who knows. Discord offers voice chat, fast chat, mobile notifications, integration with other platforms, and more. There's a lot of good reasons to still continue to use Discord after the introduction of communities on Steemit.

Any one of us could make a public spreadsheet or web page, but I see this as an opportunity for someone who can code to solve a problem before it becomes one.

So I'm throwing this proverbial spaghetti at the wall and see if it sticks.

Let's see if the law of attraction really works.

It would be a really cool idea if a website existed where Server Admins can login (with Steemconnect) and add their Discord channels to a database with a front end that displays them all. Some awesome features of this website could be:

• Search for servers by topic
• Sorting by name, members, activity, etc. via webhook? Api?
• Tagging servers with topics or categories like Individual, Bot, Service, Social Group, etc.

Some listing information for servers could be:

• Logo. It's sometimes hard to know which servers are which in Discord because it only shows a logo on the left.
• Description of the channel, mission, guidelines, etc.
• Related Steemit accounts and social media accounts
• Requirements to join, sign up, how-to and if a donation/registration required
• Contact email since Admins generally frown on being DM'd

What's Next?

• Please reach out to Discord on Twitter, by email, or by help and ask them to change the error message to be truthful.
• Please spread the word among Discord server admins that this error could arise or the be the cause of some people having problems using their links.

And What About This Website Idea?

This website would solve a problem for the entire community. Instead of everyone having to keep their own list of links and keep it updated, there would be one master-list that is always up to date.

If nobody is willing to make an official discord directory, maybe I'll do it when I have some time this Summer. If I were to do it, it would not be as cool as if someone else did though because I'm not familiar yet with coding for Steemit. Instead, I would probably just use Wordpress as a base and have a front end submission form. And it would have to be supported by volunteers. I would use an ad network or other monetization to pay for it and to pay volunteers for their time.
