My May Entry to the SteemIt Community Garden Journal Challenge - Finally getting out into the Outdoor Garden...

in #gardenjournal20195 years ago (edited)

Finally we got some warm weather last week and things are starting to sprout and I'm getting out putting in the outdoor garden!

The indoor garden is still going strong giving us our fresh greens and holding my bedding plants and Cannabis plants but gradually as the outdoor gardening progresses that will be emptied out until next fall.

I've been hardening off my bedding plants and ready to start putting the cool weather plants in. My pepper plants will be grown in containers in a warm, sunny part of our yard so I can bring them in in the fall to finish the harvest of them ( now with the lights I can probably keep some going all winter long!) I will just keep potting them up until it get real warm out and there is no danger of frost.

My poor little brassicca plants almost got taken out by flee beetles but my peppers are starting to bloom, which is good news!

In the covered garden I also have a nice patch of nettles growing that I'm going to pick to add to the cabbage soup for some extra nutrients - love my nettles for they are the first greens ready early in spring!

Since there isn't that many blooms out for the humming birds I put out a pot of flowers for them. Not sure what they feed on when they return in early spring, perhaps bugs.

You'll see the ferns are out too and I also planted up my duck planter with my favorite cool weather plants - wave pansies (these really smell sweet too) and some wave petunias.

I also planted some wave pansies in my half pot planter. This lovely clay pot had broke in half so I just layed the broken side on the ground and have flowers that look like they are pouring out of it.

The Haskaps are in full bloom and the bees have been busy in them. They are one of the earliest producing berries ready to eat in June.

The cat mint has sprouted - JJ's favorite plant! I learned to plant it at the edge of the garden away from any delicate plants for JJ loves to roll on it and nibble at it.

I got half of my greens garden planted with some lettuce, spinach and arugula just in time before the rains came.

There's been lots of robins in our yard - listen to their lovely song after one of our first spring rains...

I hope you enjoyed my garden tour and I'd love to see yours.

The sound of robins makes jamie cry as it makes him homesick for England, but he loves them too. We have Australian robins, but not really here as the other birds dominate. I love the way you add the bird songs, it's such a part of the post. I might add some bird sounds to my gardening post, which is ready to post around Tuesday/Wednesday I think as I have a few others racked up to go first! Been weeding today. So nice to see the flowers blooming and your cutest cat snuggling in the plants.

Sorry to make Jamie cry - maybe just play that sound every once in awhile and he'll at least have that part of England with him!
Do add some bird songs to your gardening post - that's a big part for me being out in the garden is listening to the birds. I've heard some of the bird sounds in some of your other videos and it sounded like they were plentiful, I'd love to hear more of them.
Looking forward for an update to your garden!

Wow porters you have an amazing indoor garden :)

Yes this is a project I just started last fall moving towards more food security with more of the extreme weather seeming to appear and our very long winters.
I have 13 parts to my indoor gardening series and the last one (which has all the links to the othersa0 you can find at https://steemit.com/gardening/@porters/april-fools-day-and-spring-is-playing-tricks-on-us-plus-indoor-garden-update

Thats quite the kind of project that more people should take on.

Extreme weather, hmm, that sounds like something. Checking more on your garden.

Love the tour! The broken pot idea was brilliant! I just adore pansies. :))

I grow both catmint and catnip here. My elderly house cat far prefers the nip over the mint. The nip will be flattened, and if she succeeds in killing it, she will rub against the mint, but it is never rolled on.

We saw the first hummingbird early last week. There's lots out there for them. But I do like your pot of Calibrachoa for yours. Such bright cheery color!

Oh, it's alive!!!! Yay for finally spring in Canadia!

You just made my day! The flowers is so nice to see, so vibrant. I love the duck on the top. You have a really good garden.

Nice post! I was pleased to see that someone else is eating nettle plant. My mom used to cook them back home, in Romania. So delicious and full of health benefits. I can’t find them here in USA in the market and I don’t have a garden...

Sweet singing of birds while out in the garden, so relaxing to listen to their tune while digging into the soil.

Nice mixture of plants readying for supply of food, fresh is best. Have a wonderful week with cat enjoying the corner specially reserved.

Aww! That looks so great.
I love your idea with the broken pot. I need to remember this! :0)

Very nice pics. Your garden is going to do great this year!

Wow... that is a great looking garden there! The first photo is pretty cool with all the colours! You also grow nettles for eating? At school, the toddler class goes out to pick nettles to make soup from... it's pretty tasty... and it is hilarious to see the 3 year olds out and about with gigantic dishwashing gloves (to protect against the stinging) on their hands (well, more like their arms!).
