Mini Motivation #61 - Setting Scary Goals
One of the hardest thing I have coming up in the next two years, is to get myself, and my 9 year old son William, ready for migration.
The target is to shift to another city within Malaysia first by end of 2019, and hop to a new city/country every year after that. We're currently looking around Asia - Chiang Mai, Thailand, Taiwan and Japan. The idea is by 15, Will will be able to decide if he wants to go back to Malaysia, or continue a nomadic life with us. Don't get me wrong, I still love my home country of Malaysia.
But why migrate when everything is ok?
That's the problem: everything is ok. Nope, I'm not the necessary trouble-maker, but for me to live abroad one city/country a year has many reasons:
- It will allow Will to experience growing up in different cultures, so that he appreciates the differences and are able to adapt quicker to changes.
- It will allow Will to be less detached to the existing group of friends, and to learn how to quickly make new friends everywhere he goes. This is to teach him that his net worth is determined by his network.
- It will allow me to get out of my own comfort zone, to design businesses and a livelihood that's constantly testing my experience and expertise.
When I relook at the goals every once in a while, I'll be honest, I am afraid.
"Will William be able to cope with the change? Is this something that I want for him? Will he resent the decision/"
"Will I be able to cope? If my existing clients drop me, will I be able to find new clients in a new city, a new country?"
These fears, they do keep me on the edge, so I continue to refine my skills and expand my network. The preparation itself is a mix bag of emotions - fear, anxiety, determination, hopelessness. Mostly for now… it's mostly fear. :)
What about you? What's a big scary goal you have coming up?
Mini Motivation is my own daily strategy to inspire myself. Mostly 3 minute reads.
From Motivation, we gain Inspiration. From Inspiration, we achieve Momentum. And the rest, they say, is history.
Hope it helps nudge you a bit too in the right direction.
Oh it did? Let me know in the comments, and of course an upvote would be a nice motivation for me. :)
Stay awesome!

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?
Well, unlike other blogging and social media platform, Steemit is the only platform that allows me to earn cryptocurrency when I engage with it. Yup, one Steem is about USD5, and you, too, can earn Steem Dollars every time you:
- Create content (articles, blog posts, podcasts, videos, photos)
- Upvote (like) other people contents
- Comment on other people's posts
- Have discussions, share opinions etc!
Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!
The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!
Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome

It is very interesting the way you see life. Most of my life I have been living in a multicultural environment, so opportunities to try and learn something new is always available to me. I am curious if you can do something similar in Malaysia?
When I was a kid my parents moved to different countries and I never had a complete education. The change in languages held me back and making new friends was difficult. From those experiences I now prefer to stay in one place and retain ever lasting friendships. Not to say one can not do that if they moved to a different country. I just have my own preference. Thanks!
Yup, you're right about having different preferences, and it took you going through different experiences to really know what you want. I'm also have to wary of the "grass is greener on the other side" syndrome. ;)
wow. it just amazes me how you're exposing your son to life.
I mean some people tend to shelter their children too much that it's not helping them grow. I'm not in the position to say that what they're doing is bad parenting or whatever. It's just that pampering children too much can actually hinder their independence and reaching their full potential, and that's according to studies.
Goodluck on the journey with your son!
Thanks! I have to be mindful if it's what I want for him, vs. what he wants. The problem with adults is that when we are asked now if we would like to travel more when we are in our tweens, we would say yes. But that's hindsight thinking. I mean, when you are 10, would you have said "Yes", or would you rather hang with your best buddies in school?
Right. Maybe you could ask his opinion? The decision would impact both your lives, and sometimes kids are a lot wiser than they appear to be. They remind us of the wisdom we grown ups have forgotten. He might actually have the answers to your questions. 😊
Yup, I do ask him from time to time. His biggest concern is making new friends.
yeah, that'd be a scary thought for someone his age. Leaving his buddies and not feeling sure how he would fit in to a new environment would be intimidating. Prolly, in a couple of years he'd be ready to venture out. Hope you do figure it out. Best of luck!
wow! that’s a new way of life! it sounds so adventurous. praying that everything works out for you and Will! will definitely want to hear about those adventures! :)
Haha, that will surely give me more stuff to write on Steemit everyday!
It's a huge step to try and live in a new place, furthermore a new country, new culture and new language, everything will be foreign. I can't imagine my self and my family living further away from our relatives. I salute you for having the guts and belief to do so.
Well, basically if we fail, we know we always have KK, right? haha.
You are welcomed with open arms...
Sir, this way of life is so unique. I have never seen anyone leading this way of life. It is very hard for me to cope with different situations and it takes a lot of time to get familiar with the environment and the people.
Frankly, I'm challenged by that too, and there are still many things I haven't figured out, like medical emergencies and all. But hey, that's about keeping life fun, eh?
@maverickfoo, that's truly a scary goal. Do take note to always observe the kids feeling and changing of emotions. Not everyone would love a frequent changes, especially when kids find it difficult to adapt to new friends circle in a short period. Anyway, it still worth a try if the kid is ready.
Yeah, quite conscious of that, hence the preparation period. Truth be told, we can never be really ready, just got to go with the flow at times. We can prepare all we want, but life has a habit of throwing a wrench in our plans all the time, eh?
@maverickfoo, truly agree life will never goes with flow. Just a precautions not to underestimate the impact of emotional changes for a kid.
