Mini Motivation #52 - Why Lesser is Sometimes Better

in #psychology7 years ago

Sidenote: Fully understood the sarcasm in the quote, but I figured I'll take another angle of it.

When people saw the limited amount of cloths I have, they sometimes asked me if it really works, this easier-to-make-decisions thing.

I can honestly tell you, just like how I tell them, it does. After 3 years of just five black tees (I have a couple extras of the same because I was caught in a jam before), two shorts, one long jeans, two sports wear and a couple of boxers, it really cuts down a lot of my decisions.

BTW, I did a longer post on my wardrobe choice a while ago here.

When I see any of my cloths on sale, I'll just ask if I need to replace my existing ones, and if yes, I'll just buy them. Regardless of the occasion - birthdays, weddings, business functions - I put on the same dress code. Initially I did feel the awkwardness, especially growing up in a culture where black means death and wearing that color to auspicious events are disrespectful, but as I observed over time, I've never been questioned on my decision.

Since then, I've also used the same minimalist approach to reduce other decisions in life. It's not about being lazy really, because what these habits and mindset has created for me are more empty spaces to think and work and expand my creativity, with minimal distractions. If there's only 24 hours a day and I can cut down one hour of decision making, then I'm essentially winning back time.

And yes, if you evaluate your day, you will realise you do spend an hour or more on just making the decision. What to eat, what to wear, where to go during the weekend, to buy or not to buy etc.

So from time to time, I've gone into a habit of asking a series of questions, and I thought maybe I'll share them you, so you can benefit from them too.

  • If I really force myself into a tight spot, what are the things in my life that I don't have to do, or don't have to have?
  • How many of the things at home that haven't been used for over a year?
  • All these just-in-case-I-need-it stuff, do I really get into situations to use them?
  • How much time do I actually spend on deciding vs acting on them?
  • If I look back at my calendar items for the past week, what could have been eliminated?
  • Am I adding too much significance and meaning to certain "activities", to respect an old tradition that may no longer be valid? Or I am just being sentimental?

Mini Motivation is my own daily strategy to inspire myself. Mostly 3 minute reads.

From Motivation, we gain Inspiration. From Inspiration, we achieve Momentum. And the rest, they say, is history.

Hope it helps nudge you a bit too in the right direction.

Oh it did? Let me know in the comments, and of course an upvote would be a nice motivation for me. :)

Stay awesome!

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?

Well, unlike other blogging and social media platform, Steemit is the only platform that allows me to earn cryptocurrency when I engage with it. Yup, one Steem is about USD5, and you, too, can earn Steem Dollars every time you:

  • Create content (articles, blog posts, podcasts, videos, photos)
  • Upvote (like) other people contents
  • Comment on other people's posts
  • Have discussions, share opinions etc!

Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!

The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!

Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome

oh this is a good post! black tees are a good suggestion. especially for my body size! if you don't mind I might steal this idea and start implementing it.

and yes. the minimalistic trend. is more than a trend. I forgot where I read a quote. I might have even been from your blog. that 'minimalistic living' isn't even about owning less. but about wanting less. so so good :)

Haha, nothing to steal bro! As a matter of fact, I would even recommend the Suprima Cotton Tee from Uniqlo. Retail price RM39, discounts at RM29. It's that I've been wearing for the past 2 years (I started with their normal cotton tees @RM19, but find the Suprima one more comfortable).

They are at most of the outlets around the region too. Seen them in JP, Thailand, Singapore.

thanks man! not only saves me time when it comes to choosing what to wear. seems like it'll save me some money as well! will check out Suprima. just wondering if it needs ironing?

I remembered during the masterclass KK, someone did asked you about your attire. Steve Jobs and Tony Fernandes would have the same answer as you. No hassle, saves times, and convenient to wear for almost every functions. I love to wear simple too, a plain black tee, a blue jeans and sports shoes.

Hey, you remembered! Yeah, simple is good, although I'm not sure if women would find it ok though...

Now that you've pointed it out, I realised that I have a lot of just-in-case-I-need-it stuff. And spent quite some time in daily lives on petty things. Minimalist lifestyle is really good idea to create more empty space for more important things in life! (Too bad that I think minimalist wardrobe will never work for me lol)
