It’s That Time Again ..

For another installment of my lunch hour, head clearing, Blind Contour Drawing! Yes!!!! I know you have all been patiently waiting for it..(cough cough) .. Okay, maybe it is only me waiting for it. Either way, I went ahead and decided to share this one with you. I have been a big fan of painting and drawing bottles and glasses for quite some time. Something about it eases my mind and allows me to escape for a few minutes, or if I am lucky, hours. So it will not surprise you that the topic of today's blind contour drawing is a Wine bottle and Glass.. Even drew the cork!

Here is the finished drawing..

Along with my source photo for not only inspiration, but for reference. It is absolutely essential that I have a source photo or still life set up to blindly draw from. I suppose one could close their eyes and draw from memory, but this is not advised for this practice. We could call that Memory Mind Blind Drawing or something like that.. A real tongue twister for sure. I prefer a still life set up, but since I don’t just have a bottle of wine and wine glass laying around the office, I had to resort to the photo. No wine at the office?? Geee Wizzz.. Right!? Hehe. The photo works just find for this simple five minute mind clearing exercise. Don’t ask me too much about the quality of the wine in the photo. Although I have had their Cabernet, It has been a long time and I do not remember how good it was. Head on over and check them out.

Five Minutes Later and ..

My state of mind is miles away. I feel refreshed and ready to get back to the grind. Again, with this small piece, I may take it home with me and put a little time into adding some tonal value to it. I think it will really come to life after that. I will do a recap and part two on some of these. I have been making promises and not living up to them. This weekend may be a good weekend for playing around with a few of these. Time will tell!

‘Blind Wine’ ~ Finished Blind Contour Drawing

As For The Process ..

I drew it ‘Blind’ and in ‘Contour’ style. One continuous line drawn without ever looking at the paper or pen. I kept my eyes focused on the subject(s), slowly moving my eyes along the major characteristics of the objects while moving my hand and pen along with them. I picked the bottom left hand side of the bottle as my starting point, and finished the drawing at the very bottom after the cork was done. Sometimes I like to add a few squiggly lines in below my drawing (provided there is enough room), in order to add a little depth. That is about as complicated as it gets.

This photo may help to give an idea of the size of the drawing

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.
