A Blind Contour Drawing Installment ..

This Drawing was inspired by a pair of “Chucks”, as we called them roughly 30 years ago. I saw them on this guy while I was waiting in line at the convenience store. What can I say, I was craving a hot cup of coffee and was feeling bored while waiting. The line was moving slower than normal. I believe someones apple pay wasn’t working quite right. Anyhow, I look down at the guys feet in front of me (I don’t usually check out peoples footwear) and I was taken back in time. I was transported (mentally..hehe) back to about 1989/90, when I acquired my first set of Chucks.. Converse All Stars. What an awesome pair of shoes. Somewhere along the way I threw them out. The holes in the canvas just got too big, otherwise I would have loved to still have them.

I Do Miss Them ..

I guess one could say that I miss them enough to make them the ‘Star’ of my new blind contour drawing titled, “Chuck”. I would have titled it Chucks, but as you can see, there is only one shoe in the drawing. I found a picture on Ebay, of a pair that looked quite similar to the ones I used to wear. Before you ask, no I am not buying them..but feel free to, if your quick enough. $18.50 USD preowned. I have the source link below the source picture.

‘Chuck’ The Blind Contour Drawing ..

So here I am, alone and needing to take a few minutes to clear my head. I find it to be relaxing to take a break in my work day, and do something that I enjoy. I really does help me to relax and refocus. Since I was still thinking about those shoes six hours or so later, I decided to draw what was on my mind. I picked up the closest thing to a Sharpie I had lying in my desk. My fine point Sharpie must of grew legs and walked out of my office, so the PaperMate Flair M will suffice. I clenched it in my right hand, determined a logical starting point and placed the tip in that general area of the paper’s surface. I would not look at the paper or that moving hand until I was sure I had finished the drawing. My eyes moved along the major details of the shoe, while my hand moved along with them. One continuous line was created from start to finish.

There You Have It! ..

The drawing is finished. For now, due to the lack of time, I will leave the drawing as is. Usually I would add some shading to it. I still may do this at some point. I may look all that much cooler with a little tonal value added. Either way, from inspiration to drawing, this was a pleasurable and mind clearing experience for me. I can’t wait for some additional inspiration to head in my direction.

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.
