Music Word of the Day: Progressive rock

in #wordoftheday6 years ago (edited)

Term: Progressive rock

Definition: Progressive rock (" prog ")

was a musical movement that reached its peak in the early 1970s and attempted to blend the visceral style of rock music with outside influences: classical, jazz, folk, and world musics, for example. There is no single all-encompassing definition of progressive rock. Much of it is more musically complex than other forms of rock, and most prog fans see this compositional complexity as a defining trait. In part because of this complexity and intellectualism, the movement of the 1970s was critically vilified because it was seen as a move away from the grassroots, working-class foundation of rock music. Contemptuously billed as pretentious and indulgent, the prog movement was a ripe target for the punk revolution of the late 1970s, which effectively wiped progressive rock off the face of the musical map. Popular bands associated with progressive rock include Yes, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Marillion, King Crimson, Genesis, and Pink Floyd.

Music Word of the Day

Every day I make an attempt to add a little bit more music knowledge to the Internet, one word at a time. Realizing there aren’t many comprehensive and complete online music dictionaries, I set out on a mission to compile my own.

I like progressive rock... I used to listen to Pink Floyd in my walkman and climb mountains/hills alone, (as a teenager) and stand on the top of the mountain and just stare out at the horizon... It was strangely satisfying...

I've always been a big fan of the old Pink Floyd. I should find their tracks again...

@artopium
Im not so sure I want to go back into that mode again,
but maybe for a cloudy day of walking... My favourite album for those occasions was the live album "Pulse" and the "Orb vs Pink Floyd" remixes...

oh man I'm way past it now. Currently I'm digging Buraka Som Sistema. ;)

And of course Solocult :D

@artopium
Buraka Som Sistema, they are pretty cool with M.I.A. and every thing. Im not so good at playing/creating music, but Im good at spotting talents early on, I think @solocult has enormous potential.

I agree. Unfortunately they are not seeing what you and I see. I hope to convince them to interact more on steemit as i think they would do very well here.

It takes some time to get "schtuff" going here, right? I think they are doing great so far!
I will try and help out to promote them as much as I can.

They don't really need to interact too much,
maybe Its better if they focus on producing their music
and just drop videos and songs here.

(Its hard to communicate with fans and such if you are on like 6 different platforms)!

Cheers!

It's my favorite music genre since the early 80's. But back then we only used the term "Artrock" to decribe this kind of music, in special with the bands you've mentioned in the post. Today, bands like Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree also come in mind. And countless more! It's still a huge scene, often crossing the border to progressive metal.

I still love listening to the old artrock from the 70's, Yes and J-Tull, but i also enjoy some new bands. The cool thing about progressive rock is that it's always progressing, while other music (except Jazz) is not.

Yes, I know plenty of people that still listen to progressive rock! But it doesn't really dominate the airwaves.
