Project Details

Node.js is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript run-time environment that executes JavaScript code outside of a browser.

Node.js came into existence when the original developers of JavaScript extended it from something you could only run in the browser to something you could run on your machine as a standalone application.

In simple words, it's an open source execution environment for developing web applications, which is event-based, it uses the V8 engine to provide an execution environment that compiles and executes JavaScript at a higher speed. It is possible to run Node.js without any restriction on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

It should be noted that it is NOT a server language, this means that it executes code, so it could be understood as an interpreter.

Contribution Specifications

Node.js is currently being translated into 33 languages. I'm contributing to translate it into the Spanish language.

So far, we have managed to translate 55% of the project!

Translation Overview

In this contribution I translated the folder vm.md. This module provides APIs to compile and execute code within V8 Virtual Machine contexts.

But, what is an API?

The abbreviation comes from the English term Application Programming Interfaces, and since the term is perhaps not very descriptive, we can define an API as a formal specification about how one module of a software communicates or interacts with another, and that allows developers to create specific programs for certain operating systems.

In this case, information is provided to execute the code inside a sandbox.

This is another new term for me, and it was very interesting to know what it is: a sandbox is an isolated test environment that allows you to run programs or execute files without affecting the application, the system or the platform on which they run.

It is quite useful, as can be seen in the image above, one of its greatest advantages is to run programs safely and without compromising the rest of the operating system.

The sandbox will be located within a context, in V8, a context is an execution environment that allows separate, unrelated, JavaScript applications to run in a single instance of V8.

So, we can say that this module provides specific instructions for executing code within V8 virtual machine contexts in a fairly secure manner.
