Exploring Melbourne - A Visit to the Home & Studio of Karl & Slawa Duldig

in #travel6 years ago

Hey again! I'm back with another feature from the city of Melbourne, this time the home, garden and studio of sculptor Karl Duldig and artist Slawa Duldig situated in Malvern East, a suburb of Melbourne. This location is peaceful and quiet, the only hint to this location given by the sculpture that is scattered across the front of this property.

Here resides the former home and studio of sculptor Karl Duldig and his wife, artist and inventor, Slawa Duldig née Horowitz. Karl was born in Poland and later moved to Vienna when he was a child. While studying under noted Austrian sculptor Anton Hanak he met his future wife, Slawa Horowitz, who were both talented in many aspects of art and lived a life of creativity, immersing themselves in the creative process on a daily basis. Karl himself tended to focus heavily on sculpture, Slawa dabbled in design and painting but also went on to invent a new type of folding umbrella. Many of the furniture and objects inside this home were designed by her, which are modular in form and have a Bauhaus inspired look that's still relevant today.

At the back of the property you can walk around Karl's original studio, a place in which he experimented with sculpture and pottery using mainly terracotta clay. These sculptures can be seen in the garden, as well as some metal ones that have been casted from these original clay versions. The whole setup is not only inspiring because of their output as artists, it's also wonderful to see how they integrated themselves in to a creative environment and lived and breathed this mentality their whole lives. Here are a few photos from my trip that I hope you enjoy. A must visit if you're ever in Melbourne and is surely an inspiring place for any creative.

Oh man, such a beautiful house! I love the design of the front, very pleasing to my eyes.
I also do love how the sculptures are within the plants and all over the yard.
I personally REALLY want to get into pottery and sculpting, I love the feeling of clay in my hands, and I really want to make pretty pots and sculptures for my garden as well.
I totally agree with imersing yourself in your art, a creative zone. I always put my art up, because art is meant to be seen, it is joy!

Thank you mcuh for sharing this beautiful piece and I hope to see more!

A beautiful house filled with beautiful art!! I have never heard of this particular sculptor - I'm inspired to go look him up. It's cool that they've kept his studio in tact, it looks like.

I've known a few sculptors in my life, and their houses are always so fun to visit. You can feel their creativity in the space.

Yeah, definitely. This is not that well known at the moment but they are hoping to get their name out there. You can walk through all the house but they wouldn't let me take pictures. It was really cool to see! A shame as I wanted to promote it lol Thanks for your comment :)

Very nice to hear such an inspiring story about two creatives.

It's amazing to think that if we all continue in our efforts here on the platform, we could quite easily set ourselves up for an autonomous freelance lifestyle.

There is some really fascinating sculptures there, great work with snapping loads of pictures. I would love to be a wood sculptor at some point in my life, with the right effort and work I will get there one day.

Thank you for the lovely post.

Thanks for your comment @calumam. I agree. It is quite amazing to think that. I didn't think of that before you said it actually, so it's a good point to consider.

You can surely do it. Just keep chipping away (no pun intended lol). All the best

What a great place to visit. I love the style of the sculpures.

Thanks for the comment :)
