Exploring Los Angeles - A Visit to the Stahl House by Pierre Koenig

My next stop in Los Angeles was the Stahl House designed by American architect Pierre Koenig. This house was also part of the "Case Study" series alongside the Eames House located in Pacific Palisades neighbourhood and was no.22 out of 36 designed. Not all of them were built but this one has become iconic thanks to a photograph by architectural photographer Julius Shulman who took a picture of two women sitting in the corner of the house overlooking LA.

Originally this was just an empty piece of land above Sunset Blvd and was purchased fairly cheaply in 1954 by the Stahl family. In 1956 Buck Stahl constructed a model of his dream home and hired architect Pierre Koenig to envision it, later being inducted in to the Case Study series. This is now a cultural landmark and I highly recommend you visit if you're ever in Los Angeles. You have to book online and pay a small fee, but it's worth it.

It's actually a little weird photographing this piece of architecture. As I stood near the edge my brain couldn't quite process the view and vastness of the city ahead. Once I had finished photographing I just sat back and enjoyed the scene in front of me, I certainly didn't want to leave.

Interesting Stats:
The family paid approximately $50,000 USD to build the home and buy the land.
They were offered $15,000,000 to sell the property but declined and lived in it until they passed away.
The vintage photograph taken by Julius Shulman is worth around $50,000 USD (the same price to build this property!).
It only took 1 day to erect the steel frame and has 270 degrees of unobstructed mountain-to-ocean view from the living room.

This is quite understated and subtle compared to villas around the hillside area that can be so lavish, 'playboy and vice'.

Yeah, it's quite understated actually. Must be a little weird living there as you can literally see everything from all sides. Although the bathroom and bedroom have a little privacy lol

This looks like a very beautiful place to visit. I can imagine that lounging in the glass room would be enjoyable in various types of weather. It would be a nice place to sit and read a book on a rainy day. I'll have to remember this if I'm ever out in California. Perhaps I can visit, too.

I think you did a great job with the photographs. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the nice comment man. Appreciate it. Yeah, please visit if you can. Many people don't know about it but have seen this property on a film or in a magazine or something. But visiting is quite mind blowing when you see the view, shame I couldn't stay longer haha Oh, and you can go at night too! :)

That's great! Is it just open to the public, or did you have to do anything special to see it?

Sure, it's open to the public but you have to reserve on their website before you go. They usually have groups of 15 people I think. Maybe less, I can't remember. All info is available on the website here -https://stahlhouse.com/tours

Excellent! Thank you for letting me know!

This is pretty awesome. I feel like this house has been in a movie or two. Maybe it was a just soundstage setup to look like this house. Thanks for the info and the great pictures!

Yeah, it has been in a few films and also many magazines. I was told the family members still control the property and do these tours to keep maintaining the property, but also let magazines and photographers come from time to time.

I thought so. Thanks for the info!

Yes...I have seen this house before on tv! Super cool to know a little more! Interesting!

Yeah, glad I could shed some light. I heard that it cost around $50,000 USD to build at the time (including the lot). Crazy stuff. I guess that might be a lot of money now. But they were offered 15 million to sell it but they family declined lol

Incredible!!!
