MoriartyRoue Wanderlust #9 - Kenia - Mombasa oldtown
Before I wanted to rest on the beach, my way led me to the old town of Mombasa.The old town of Mombasa is an island surrounded by a water ring.Some bridges link the old town with the city of Mombasa.
Mombasa Old Town
I jumped into Matatu and set out to explore the city. My Matatu driver turned out to be a travel guide and during our trip he could tell me a lot about Mombasa. First we drove through the Tusker, two huge gates formed from metal tusks. The Matatu driver aka. travel guide explained to me that the huge tusks are a sign of Africa's wealth and waste. They were built especially for the British Queen's visit!
Mombasa Altstadt
Ich sprang ins Matatu und machte mich auf den Weg die Stadt zu erkunden. Mein Matatufahrer entpuppte sich als Reiseführer und im Laufe unserer Fahrt konnte er mir viel über Mombasa erzählen. Zuerst fuhren wir durch die Tusker(Stoßzähne), zwei riesige Tore geformt aus Blechstoßzähnen. Der Matatufahrer aka. Reiseführer erklärte mir, dass die riesigen Stoßzähne ein Zeichen für Afrikas Reichtum und Verschwendung sind. Sie wurden extra für den Besuch der britischen Königin errichtet!

Weiter ging es zu einem kleinen Aussichtspunkt von dem man einen wunderbaren Blick auf die Meeresausläufer hatte, welche die Altstadt umschliessen. Das Hauptverkehrsmittel, um aus der Altstadt in die angrenzenden Stadteile zu gelangen, ist eine von der Stadt Mombasa betriebene - für Fußgänger - kostenlose Fähre. Autos werden gegen eine kleine Gebühr mitgenommen.
Die Fähre
Die Fähre fährt alle halbe Stunde und transportiert eine Maße an Menschen. Als ich die Fähre betrat ist mir sofort aufgefallen, dass ich der einzige hellhäutige zwischen den dunkelhäutigen Einwohnern war. Einer meiner prägendsten Momente in Kenia. Wir alle uns auf der Fähre befindenden Menschen waren gleich. Keine musternde Blicke! Lediglich eine kleine Gruppe Schulkinder, welche vermutlich noch nie oder sehr selten einen hellhäutigen gesehen haben, kamen interessiert auf mich zu. Ein Lächeln, ein Hand geben und eine positive, offene Stimmung kam mir entgegen, welche Ich in Deutschland leider eher selten erlebe. Die Kenianer sind ausgesprochen herzliche und gastfreundliche Menschen und Ich finde es so unglaublich schade, dass sie so stark unter dieser ''lächerlichen'' Einreisewarnung leiden müssen. Es ist nicht erlaubt auf den Fähren Bilder zu machen, deswegen hab ich leider nur ein Bild von ausserhalb für euch.
We went on to a small vantage point from where we had a wonderful view of the sea surrounding the old town. The main means of transport to get from the Old Town to the neighboring districts is a free ferry service (for pedestrians) operated by the city of Mombasa . Cars are taken along for a small fee.
The Ferry
The ferry leaves every half hour and transports a lot of people.
When I entered the ferry I immediately noticed that I was the only light-skinned one between the dark skinned inhabitants. One of my most formative moments in Kenya. All of us on the ferry were equal. No eye-catching looks! Only a small group of schoolchildren who have probably never or very rarely seen a light-skinned person approached me with interest. A smile, a handshake and a positive, open atmosphere accommodated me, which I unfortunately rarely experience in Germany. The Kenyans are very warm and hospitable people and I find it so incredibly unfortunate that they have to suffer so much from this'' ridiculous'' travel warning. It is not allowed to take pictures on the ferries, so I only have a picture from the outside for you.

Fort Jesus
Das Fort Jesus wurde im Jahre 1593 von den Portugiesen erbaut und galt ursprünglich als uneinnehmbare Festung.
Mein Reiseführer erzählte mir, dass es im Laufe der Zeit jedoch sehr häufig den Besitzer wechselte.Viele Mythen und Heldensagen ranken sich um das Fort Jesus. Die bekannteste handelt wohl von einem portugiesischen Offizier, der arabische Invasoren in das Pulverhaus führte, anstatt in die Schatzkammer und sich gemeinsam mit Ihnen in die Luft sprengte.

Built in 1593 by the Portuguese, Fort Jesus was originally considered an impregnable fortress.My travel guide told me that it changed hands very often over time.There are many myths and heroic legends about Fort Jesus. The best-known one is probably about a Portuguese officer who led Arabian invaders into the gunpowder room instead of the treasury room and blew himself up together with them.

I let the evening end with a tusker (beer), got into a Matatu and made my way to Diana Beach, where I wanted to spend the last days in Kenya. The journey took forever, the traffic network of the Matatus is not easy to see through as a beginner: D
