Stephen R. Covey's book «The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People», one of the most influential and powerful books of our time, focuses on how our own self – mastery is far more important than outward success and lists the real 7 habits of effective people. In this piece I draw inspiration from this amazing book and see how we can use these habits to gain success here on Steemit.

The 1st habit is to be pro – active , not – to quote the author – a pavlovian dog. You have to simply make choices now and not rely on fate. A valuable step in making choices and decisions is to honor your own commitments. Basically, complete your commitments to achieve a consistent level of joy and happiness. As a matter of fact, when you are not doing the stuff you're supposed to do, you dishonor yourself and your achievement plan. Look at the word responsibility ’response-ability’, it’s the ability to choose your response. You can choose to whine and bitch about those whales that don’t vote our posts, or you can choose to post great content and interact with the community and thus create a following of your own. What would you choose ?

The 2nd habit is based on a principle that all things are created twice, first in the mind and then in reality. «Begin with the end in mind», it's simple as that. If you wanna be recognized as a kind and loving person, think and act as one right now. Your present actions reflect on your future. Be clear with what you want, form a plan, be proactive and execute it.

Moving on habit no. 3, Covey suggests that you should «put first things first», or as in Goethe's words «Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least». Don't distract yourself, don't let interruptions to pester you throughout the day. Instead focus on the worth doing stuff, the important ones, not the urgent stuff that might stress you out.

What is it important to you? For your success, here and elsewhere. Be consistent, be determined, be fanatic with your time. You have to learn how to say no, not to apologize, but to stand your own ground. Practice again and again your «ΝΟ» as well as achieving three more steps, such as planting priorities, efficiency and effectiveness and roles and goals. Plant your priorities deeply into your mind, be effective in dealing with people and identify the roles you play in life to create goals for those.

The 4th habit focuses on a well known idea, called win/win. You need to approach your relationships (both business and intimate) with this in mind, starting today. As Abraham Lincoln said, ''When getting ready to reason with a man, I spend one-third of my time thinking about myself and what I am going to say and two-thirds thinking about him and what he is going to say''. Well, that's habit no. 5. Seek first to understand the other people's perspective before you want them to understand yours. The 6th habit, called synergy, finds its roots in the greek word syn-ergos which means working together. ( little bit proud greek here ). Everything in your life, every relationship, can get more powerful if it becomes synergistic. This is as relevant as it gets, here in this community.Understanding people, form mutual benecifial relationships and work together will get us far in the game.

Last but not least, Covey's 7th habit, Sharpen the Saw, is very straightforward. Take the time to renew, to sharpen your saw by exercising, meditating, spending time with your loved ones and other things you cherish and matter in your life. How do you sharpen your Steemit saw ? Take the time to learn the platform. How it works , what are the rules , what successful people are doing. I know that there is a bit of a learning curve, especially with the financial aspect of Steemit, but when you learn and master the mechanics the system will reward for for your effort.

These are the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, not only here but in every aspect of life. I wonder what habit strike you the most. Where are you lacking ? I definitely have to work on focusing and not get distracted by the next shining object.
