Song of Angels - Chapter 23

Mindy opened her eyes and saw modern fluorescent lights overhead speeding by and felt herself moving on something she was lying on.

"Where am I?"

" I am Doctor Perry", the man said. "You are in the hospital. You need to rest everything is all right. You will be okay. We are taking you to your room."

"Where is Cyrus? Can I speak to him?"

"He is nearby but we want you to rest." The doctor said as she was wheeled into her room.

"I want to talk to Cyrus. Is that you Mel?"

"Yes Mindy."

"Wait here." The Doctor said to Mel.

Mel stopped following the gurney. Mindy started to nod off.

"I am sleepy. It is warm again."

"That is right. You are in a warm, safe place." The Doctor said. "We will put you in your bed. We are going to put an I.V. in your arm, Okay?"

"Okay. I am sleepy." Mindy nodded off.

"One, two, three...LIFT!" Doctor Perry ordered. They placed Mindy in the bed and covered her. "Nurse, start a D5W Lanacaine drip, with a 5 percent saline. Administer 200 milligrams of Valium. Let's get an electric blanket on this bed. I also want stearol 5 percent applied to all the affected areas of her body, looks like mostly her face, wrists, and ankles."

"Yes, doctor."

"Amazing, that long and she has just a little irritation from the cold."

"Once the blood workup gets back from the lab we will know what else we need to do?"

"Affirmative." The Doctor said to the nurse, "Notify me as soon as it is ready. I will see her boss and the Sheriff. Then return to see the patient for any further observation and course of treatment." The Doctor went out into the hallway. He addressed the Sheriff and Mel, "Let's walk away from the door, gentlemen."

The Doctor turned and the two followed. After about ten paces, he came to a stop and turned toward Mel and the Sheriff. "Mr. Shremk, Deputy Smith. It does look like she is going to be just fine. Her blood pressure is very low, her body temperature is coming back up. She has quickly lost some weight over the last four days, has minor frostbite that should heal and pose no problems for her. Are there any questions about her condition? Mr. Shremk?"

"So, she will be alright, then?"

"I think so yes, but she will need at least two weeks rest before she can be moved, probably about a month before she can return to work, maybe a little longer."

"I am thankful she survived but how could she have survived that?"

"Don't really know, except she must have eaten snow for water. She had the shelter of the ruin. She had her fire. Now, what seems to have happened is she went into a state very near hibernation. Fortunately, she was found in time because I do not think she would have lasted out there that much longer. A day, maybe two but we do not have to worry about that do we?"

"So, is it a miracle?"

"Oh it is definitely a miracle, Mr. Shremk."

"Thanks Doctor Perry, I know she is in good hands. If you don't mind, I'd like to hear what the Sheriff has to say."

"Sheriff?" the Doctor asked.

"I have no problem with that. My only question is that she keeps talking about a Cyrus Weeks. You don't think a man grabbed her and took her out there do you?"

"She is most likely hallucinating, in a waking dream but we can check if the county wants her checked, on the rest of her body there really isn't much as far as abrasions or bruises. None of her clothes are torn but one of her shoes seems to have started to fall apart."

"Well, the D.A. wants to be certain she was not abducted. Because the other question is, why would she walk in that direction and not back to the Cementex plant?"

"I think I might be able to offer one possible explanation," Mel said, "There is no sign for the plant at the turnoff. She probably did not what direction to walk and decided she could make it to the highway."

"Are you sure there is no sign there? I went over that way a couple of days before this and I don't remember the sign being gone."

"There is no sign." Mel answered. "And her car was quite far from the turnoff. Maybe a mile?"

The Sheriff checked his notes. "Two point four three miles actually, almost two and a half."

"That far?"

"Yes, that is what it turned out to be, she drove for two miles more after the road ended and the road became a cattle track."

"Okay. If it is all right with everyone here, I must leave to call the company, report her situation, which again is very good, right Doctor Perry?"

"Yes. Mindy has a very good prognosis for complete recovery."

"Good. Thank you if you'll excuse me." Everyone nodded and Mel turned to leave.

He could hear the Sheriff say as he walked away, "When will she be able to be interviewed Doctor?"

"As soon as she is lucid, the hospital will inform you."

"Good. If she is wondering about her car, we have towed it to the county yard. And the D.A. still wants her examined for sexual assault."

"Do we have a Cyrus Weeks here in this county?"

"There is no Cyrus Weeks in the State but that doesn't mean anything, she could have been given a false name, or who knows what at this stage?"

"My diagnosis is she is hallucinating and delusional from exposure to extreme cold for a prolonged period but we will do the examination while she is asleep."

"Excellent. Anything else you need from me Doc?"

"No, we have it from here and we will notify you as soon as she is awake and lucid."

"Excellent. Good day."

"Good day to you and I'll just check on my patient."

The sheriff talked into his mike as he began to walk down the corridor, "Doctor Perry thinks she is just hallucinating from exposure to cold but he will perform an examination for sexual assault." Doctor Perry went to Mindy's room and entered. Nurse Eva Morris applied the salve to the patient's skin and she was nearly finished.
