Sneaky Names For Sugar - Watch Out!
I know I talk a LOT about sugar, but that’s because it’s important! Here in America, overconsumption of sugar is to blame for a handful of the most serious, widespread and yet often preventable health problems that plague our nation.
One of the biggest issues in my opinion is lack of education - not only that many people aren’t aware of the negative effects sugar can have on their health, but also that you would have to go out of your way to learn how to recognize the sugars that hide in your food because they go by so many different names.
Barley malt? Sounds like it comes from barley, which is a grain, so it should be ok, right? Well, it’s actually sugar.
Fruit juice concentrate? Sounds like it comes from fruit, so it should be at least moderately healthy, right? It’s also actually just sugar.
Maltodextrin - WTF? I’m not a scientist, so what even is that? Again, sugar.
From whatever source, sugar is still sugar. It can be “natural” like agave or honey, or highly processed like high-fructose corn syrup, but it all affects your body in a similar way. And since it’s such an affordable flavor enhancer and filler, companies use it all the time to make their products more palatable.
When reading ingredient labels, it’s not uncommon for even those of us who are experienced with food and nutrition to get lost in a list of words we don’t recognize, and furthermore couldn’t possibly pronounce!
So if you’ve never even considered this before, you’re not alone. And if you’re overwhelmed and confused, you’re definitely not alone!
The two lessons I hope you’ll take away from this are:
Read the nutrition label AND the ingredient label. The nutrition facts will tell you how much of each macronutrient (protein, fat, carbs) are in a food, and will also break down the amount of sugars it contains as a subcategory of the carbohydrate count. This is important, as it will give you the total amount of sugar in that product regardless of the source.
If the product you’re considering has tons of ingredients, and you don’t know what many of them are, put it back. That’s a great indicator that it’s highly processed and probably a vehicle for lots of things that don’t do your body any favors… As a general rule of thumb, the fewer ingredients the better!
Here are some more of my favorite names for sugar that you might not have noticed yet:
Dehydrated cane juice (this one is hilarious to me)
Evaporated cane juice crystals
Golden syrup
Muscavado
Sucrose
Dextrose
Black strap molasses
Crystallized fructose
This is just barely scratching the surface, friends… There are dozens of sneaky names for sugar, so be your own sleuth! It’s as simple as grabbing your phone and doing a quick google search of an ingredient you don’t know - it’s 2018 guys, use technology to your advantage!
The more you learn the more horrified you will likely become… Sorry in advance! Sometimes you’ll chance upon a beloved product whose first few ingredients you may not recognize, and then you do a little research and realize that ALL of them are sugar, just under different names. Bummer.
But I’d personally way rather know, because that puts me in control of my health and fitness. I know that I’ll only ever have this one body, so I want to treat it as well as I can! In this case, in my opinion, ignorance is not bliss!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - knowledge is power. It’s corny, but true! Take it upon yourself to learn as much as you can about how to stay healthy. I’ll always do my best to help with that!
If you ever have questions, which ALL of us do, never hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to contribute in any way that I can!

It is a little more complex than that. Simple sugars are broken into 3 main categories: Galactose, Fructose, and Glucose. The 3 are called Monosacharides and each represent a simple molecule of just a few atoms. Granulated sugar for example is basically a mix of glucose and fructose. Most fruits contain Sucrose, a mix of glucose and fructose as well.
Then there are Polysaccharides which are simply long chains of monosaccharides, like starches and carbohydrates. Grains, potatoes, and legumes contain these long chains.
FYI this is the simple version relevant to the nutritional discussion, as a chemist will tell you there are actually 4 different types - monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides.
Sugar is a compact form of energy for our body. It is not outright bad, as we need it to live, but definitely can be abused and contribute to a variety of health problems when it is.
Sugars exist in just about everything we eat that was derived from something that was once living. Plants contain sugar for the same reason we need them, as a form of energy.
What is important is that the simple molecules are easy for the body to break down and consume. So they are fast. Longer molecules take more time and represent a form of energy storage. There are other factors, like the need for enzymes and ability to dissolve in water, but that is for a deeper discussion.
Our body chemistry uses these different types of sugar in various ways, based upon their molecular bonds. So don't get too caught up in the various names. Yes, juices contain sugar but are not entirely sugar.
Reading labels. Looking at the Ingredient labels only gives you part of the story. If the first ingredient is High Fructose Corn Syrup, you can bet the food contains a high percentage of simple sugars. But also go to the Nutritional label to see the quantity. Those two will help you understand the type and amount of sugar in the item.
Hope this helps.
This is all great! Thank you for adding such detailed information, I think lots of us will appreciate this... And I agree, it's just important to be mindful - that was really what I was hoping to convey here, so I'm stoked to have the reinforcement! :)
Sugar is definitely sneaky, like MSG, so we really have to read food labels accurately! I'm in the process of cooking more from scratch so I can control how much sugar goes into my family's food. But definitely knowing the names of all different sugars is helpful since I need to rely on processed foods once in a while. Thanks.
Yes, totally! And you're so welcome! Love that you're being mindful on behalf of your family, they're lucky to have you doing that for them :) cheers!
nother great post!

yes, sugar is addictive like cocaine and heroin. When we consume sugar our brain gets stimulated and release dopamine. so we have more crave for sugar and today's food industry is responsible for this. today's junk food is lack of essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins instead they persistently increasing sugar concentration in our foods and beverages so we can be addicted to them.
Most of us are unaware about what we are eating in the name of sweetness. We are consuming sugar in such a huge quantity that no one in our ancestors did. Our daily consuming of sugar level increasing day by day. sugar has been linked to various diseases not only type 2 diabetes but also heart diseases, cancers, aging etc. sugar is addictive like drugs. It affects our brain mechanism too. The average Americans daily sugar intake is more than 20 teaspoons each. Thanks for awarness on this topic
Yes!!! Isn't it wild? So fascinating... And you're absolutely welcome, thank you so much for your thoughtful and informative comment!
mmm this tastes like it has sugar in it...I like it....lol ;) haha
Hahaha I'm right there with you, man! I think we're pretty much two peas in a pod haha! But I think most people would agree with us on that, wouldn't they? Sugar really is delicious haha ;)
lol I know right? haha. :) Yes I think that most people would definitely agree with us! Sugar is pretty much the bomb! haha
Nice write-up
Sugar is also important in the body, it helps in synthesis of urine....
.but the excess is bad
table sugar is around from 1800s...how can it be something useful for the body if we lived most of human history without it?
Hey, thanks! And yes, I agree @thompson2 - it's really the excess that is the issue, right? @victorwho I think that regardless of the processing method all sugars are something our bodies can use, but I think that the real issues occur when they're consumed past reasonable moderation... Gotta keep things in balance the best we can! :)

I'm on week 4, off of sugar, feel amazing!!!
Oh wow, that's awesome!!! Good for you! Taking time away from sugar is one of the most challenging exercises for me - but I am always glad when I take a break from it :) keep up the great work! I've been on vacation and have been pretty relaxed with my nutrition, but I'll be joining you on that sugar break as soon as I get home :)
