On this occasion I would like to once again, discuss the topic of how to generate a tough generation, this time with the focus being on how you encourage children to be confident and spirited individuals. As we grow we discover the different personalities that people have. Some people love to be the centre of attention, while others feel inferior and prefer to hide or keep to themselves. As adults, we know that those who “put themselves out there” are more likely to be successful, than those who shy away from opportunities are anything that they feel requires too much pressure. As parents and teachers we need to teach our children to be confident, we need to feed their self-esteems and make them acknowledge that they are valued.

To build courage, children need opportunities to be courageous. Set age appropriate tasks for them to do that challenge their capabilities. If the need help, help them, but let them take the lead so that once the task is achieved, they can feel a feeling of euphoria. They will have an “I DID IT” attitude.

Do things yourself that require confidence or “guts”. Kids learn best by example and if their parents can do it, they might just realise that they can too! Also, show them that it is also OK to fail at something, and that trying is more important than succeeding.

To motivate a child requires you to spend time with them. As parents and teachers we need to be available to our children, we need to witness their successes and give praise. If we are not there to see them excel, we cannot motivate them to move forward again and again.

Mistakes are normal, in fact, they are healthy! Children must not be afraid to fail or make mistakes, instead as parents, we need to help pick them back up again and support them at their next attempt. No one learns anything when mistakes are not made.

Each child is unique, with talents and traits that are their own. Appreciate the uniqueness in children, encourage them to do what the love and support them, this is one sure way to raise a spirited and confident child.

Having confidence and a high self-esteem is necessary in children, especially in those who are about to enter adulthood, where the demands aren’t as gentle and the pressure is tight. As parents and teachers it is your responsibility to teach these qualities.
