(15). Do not Ridicule and Blaspheme

As parents and caregivers, we set the example. We all want our children to feel safe, comfortable and to develop well. This means that we really need to pay attention to our child’s environment, but more importantly, we need to be careful of how we as adultsact in this environment.

It is with this in mind that I would like to point out the power of words. A simple word can make or break a child. Parents, watch what you say and when you say it! If you tend to judge, ridicule and blaspheme, you are setting an incorrect example for your children, since they will adopt these negative traits and carry them into their school years. Instead, use words that are positive in nature as often as possible. This will not only improve your own view on life, but will encourage your child to flourish in everything he or she does.

The same goes for when you are disciplining your child. Be careful of what you say and how you say it, because the wrong words can do more damage than the good you are trying to do. Use positive reinforcement and speak to children with age-appropriateness in mind, so that they understand your words and not just your disappointed actions.

We also need to remember that although our children are born to us, it does not mean that they are us. They have unique personalities and absorb information differently to us. What you might not think is a harsh word, they might be more sensitive and take the negative connotation very seriously. So, choose your words wisely and get to know your kids.

Gentle and polite phrases go along way and have the power to change a life. This does not mean there is no room for criticism, by all means, flaws need to be pointed out and corrected. But if you do all of this in a positive light and move forwards instead of backwards, all will be well!
