Fractions as Part of a Set or a Group
In the previous post we learned about fractions as part of whole. Today we will talk about fractions as part of a set or part of a group.
For example; Kim raised 5 dogs, two are black and 3 are white. We can write the fraction of dogs which are black. We are talking about black dogs and their number will become the numerator of the fraction and total number of dogs (which is 5) will become the denominator of the fraction. Hence fraction of black dogs is 2/5.

When I was a kid, my teachers taught me fraction as an abstract mathematics topic. I had it tough then. As i grow older, I realized it is not. It actually has everyday applications just like percentage. For example, if I pick 2 items out of 5 items, then i have 2/5 fraction of the whole item. It is actually interesting. When I teach my kids in school, we usually have fun around it and everyone learns it fast. I appreciate your effort in bringing us everyday applicable math topics.

Some students find it difficult but if we explain using visuals and examples from day to day life they get it easily.
