Create a Story Together!

There is nothing more fun or interesting as creating a communal story!

You can do this with any age group. I have done this with toddler children and I have done this at work when we were snowed in with the power off!

It keeps you all occupied, gets the creative mind flowing, and can even be used as a filler in almost any group activity!

How to Create a Communal Story

Start with a sentence or two to set the scene. "Jan and Steve were on their way to the museum. Steve had forgotten to fill the car with gas."

Then hand it off to the next person, who adds a sentence to the story- "Jan was mad at him but suddenly they heard a large BOOM."

And it goes person to person, with each adding to the story. It can go as long as you need- I am part of a communal internet story that has been going for 6 years!

Tips

  • If you are studying something- use it! For a first grade class the only rule could be each student must use one of this weeks vocabulary words. For a second year law class you can use the obscure laws you learned this semester to create a very strange story of being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

  • You don't have to write or record it, especially if it's a story to fill in the seven minutes before lunch, but it sure is fun and the stories can get wild!

  • Use the story as a grammar and spelling lesson. Write it on the board, and each student corrects grammar and spelling in the last sentence before adding their own.

Great way to cure boredom, pass time when waiting for something, inspiration to get yourself started by saying random sentences and helping set the scene to try add to.

...as the Goliath pondered the random sentence, another one flexed it's mighty words and shoved it's way into the forefront, demanding his full attention...

That other one was always willing to shove its way to the forefront for everyone, after all, it is pizza that called his attention!

Mmm pizza time 😂

Dang pizza'll do it every time...

;)

Nice post..👌👍
Thank you for sharing..😊😊

Thank you for reading :)

Good post! This is always a fun idea! My children and I do this all the time. We started years ago while we would take walks around the neighborhood or to go get groceries. Two of our favorite reoccurring characters are a lizard who is a wizard and a spy who couldn't take the stress anymore and decided to just live on a roof in our neighborhood. The looks we get when people overhear us telling these stories...hilarious!!

Lol! I can relate! My boys and I do this and now that they are teenagers the stories are quite strange and borderline morbid if you're not listening to the whole thing or know what we're talking about!

You know, I hadn't thought of it before, but this would be excellent to help the kids with their Enlgish. Frank, the kids and I could create a story in English, so of course, some of their sentences would be a little chunky and not make as much sense, but it would be a fun way for them to learn, because I'd help them with their phrase structuring in the process. They'd come up with the sentence, and I'd tell them the correct way to write it, perhaps write it myself and have them look and then they can read it.

Sometimes, what we do is a silly game where someone write a sentence, folds the paper to hide it and write one word on the next line. The next person has to continue based on that one word and they write their last word on the next line. At the end we read the "story" which makes no sense and is hilarious. We do this typically in French. It could be fun to incorporate it in English, it would be a good laugh, and it wouldn't matter if the sentences don't make sense, because that's the whole point with that game.

That is a cool twist, and yea, it truly does not matter if it makes sense- in fact, the weirder the better!

Weird is good :)

I like to say I thrive on my insanity... I'm afraid of the so called sane people...

LOL

Haha! Same.

Communal stories are such a great way for children to develop their imagination (adults too of course). With little ones, I also enjoy doing communal drawings. All it takes is a piece of paper and a pencil, each child takes a turn drawing the feature of a monster, for example. As soon as the child lifts the pen, it is someone else's turn. Or drawing a landscape, with a certain limit on time for each participant. Loads of fun in the whole process! And always interesting to see the end results :)

for communal drawing we fold the paper in thirds and hide each section except for the one being worked on. I'll start with the head, for instance. Then fold that back and the next person draws the body, then folds it over, then third person draws the legs. When we unfold we have a crazy, nonsensical monster that is always hilarious!

Yes! I've done that one with children too and love it. Great way to keep everyone busy and focused for a bit.

Yup! ~ and out of trouble ;)

Haha! Unless you've got a "runner". Then you have to find ways to keep him/her busy in between turns. And that's another challenge ;)

Ahh, yes! That is a challenge! lol!

I would like to write a story about how I came across this post a minute after it was posted, a minute before i was ready to take off for bed, cuz it's getting a bit late and I've gotta get up early later this morning, so g'nite to ya! :) lol

... and Alex shuffled off to bed, grumbling and unwilling to leave his beloved Steemit world behind. But he snuggled into his covers and found the cool side of the pillow and drifted off into a much needed rest...

...to be continued

:)

very nice idea @arbitrarykitten. takes the creativity out of your brain.
