Become a One Trick Pony to Make a Fortune

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

When you are first starting out you face a lot of competition. How many of the 7 billion Earthlings are in your chosen field?

You have to rise above all the others! A daunting task, but one made feasible by becoming a one trick pony!

It may sound cliche but it's proven- it does not matter how many subjects you've mastered and how many talents you possess- the most valuable strategy when you first start out is to appear to be the master of one.

Take writing for instance. Most of us on Steemit want to be excellent writers. There are a lot of people trying to be paid writers. You must first capture and retain an audience. Your audience is who pays your bills. Without an audience, you go hungry. In order to obtain and retain readers the most valuable strategy is to present yourself as an expert in one subject- your "niche."

Sure you can write about a whole bunch of varying things, and you will gain a fan base. However, if you appear as a supreme master in one area you will grow faster.

By focusing on what you know, you will educate or entertain the public with your unique knowledge. You will capitalize on what you know and your experience.

It does not matter how many tricks you have up your sleeve, focus on one single strong subject that you are comfortable with when you are first starting out. One area of expertise people have commended you for, or that you have studied extensively and can talk about all afternoon. After they are in love with your work, you can begin to branch out into other areas, growing your audience as you go, niche by profitable niche :)

Write from your heart, and write often :)

Niche is definately the way to go although if you were to take a look at my feed you may well wonder what I am up to!

:)

This has given me reason to reflect as I may be confusing my (potential) audience.

Huuum ~ hashtags is another area of possible confusion chez moi.

Work to do, me thinks.

A strategy is needed!

Thank-you.

Perhaps take one that is working well, and mostly that you love, and focus the majority of your posts as a beginner here on that subject. Then branch out from there as you gain a loyal audience :)

@arbitrarykitten I love focusing on what I am the BEST at. I have been most successful on the things that I have great knowledge of. I do admit I get a little off track now and then because I am a Curious Kitty. As you know though being True to your Craft especially here on STEEMIT will take you places....................

Yes- being true to your craft will take you higher, well said @stokjockey :)

Yeah... Your idea is good...
Subject/topic in which you are master, you should post in same topic will definitely benefits you..

Your post is impressive 👍
Keep doing good work @arbitrarykitten

Exactly!

Thank you :)

I'm happy you're impressed!

Haha What about those of us that are the terminal Jack-of-all-trades? I never was very good at specializing.

If it's working for you, stick with it. But usually a strong foundation in one area first is strategic. However- everyone is different! If what you are doing is working for you and you are seeing the level of growth you feel is good, then you are doing the right thing :)

@wylde I am totally with you, but as a total newbie here, I take the advice to focus on one specific topic and even within that, limit to one story line for my first few posts at least, in order to have coherence and create community. This will require some discipline on my part since there is so much I would like to share, but I also need to know what is already here and what it is missing in order to add value. Then I will slowly expand on that.

I take from @arbitrarykitten response, that this is just a suggestion based on her experience but if you are already successful you don´t need to do it that way. I will take it on board since I still have to write my 'introduceyourself' post and this article has made me rethink it.

Thanks @arbitrarykitten for the recommendation.

I like the title - gives me something to aim for - i suck at writing , but i been practicing lately ;)

Practicing is definitely the #1 thing to do! Persistence will pay off :)
