Users like to know where the delete button is... even if it doesn't work. Steemit needs to have a delete button. :)
NEW FEATURE REQUEST: A delete button that is always present.
On Friday Dec 16th, during the BeyondBitcoin "After Party" radio show, as usual, fantastic conversation came up, and one of the things we began to discuss was the lack of a delete feature for posts on steem.
Now according to this official issue:
A new delete button exists from back in June, I think, which allows you to delete a post, "if" it hasn't had any comments AND has zero chance of a potential payout and it is within its payout time.
(This generally happens if you don't upvote youself and/or someone downvotes your post to a negative value)
So some users will indeed see a DELETE button.
But if those conditions are not true. The DELETE button disappears. I do not think a delete button should ever disappear, and that includes even if it is unable to delete anything.
If you push the delete button, it should either delete the post, or pop up a window and say "Sorry unable to delete this post. See this link for more information"
User interfaces are suppose to be intuitive. Give the illusion the user has all the needed options at their disposal, even when they don't. Microsoft use to solve things by "greying" out features. That just angers people if something is greyed out. They just run to google and go "why is XYZ greyed out?"
Instead, let the button or feature be there, even if it can't be used. If they click it, then inform the user "you can't do this right now, because....."
This is the best way of teaching someone how the system works. People will learn quite quickly on their own this way, and they won't have to do this instead:
Leave multiple posts, by multiple people, all asking the same question, filling up the STEEM blockchain. This wastes their time, my time, and the blockchain's time.

Here's some quotes from people from past (numerous) discussions on this same topic that are noteworthy.
pharesim
this is why we'll see a much higher ratio of quality content here than on other platforms
professorx
This will bring more high quality content to Steemit, but also makes users more finicky about what to post since it is a forever-ledger.
stormbringer
Its built that way by design. Like the ledger of an accountant, where errors can be corrected, but never be removed
tuck-fheman
Create one account for drunken tirades and another for sober musings, then pray you remember to check which one you're logged into while drunk. ;)

blockchain's biggest power is transparency. at least public ones
jamtaylor
I like having a sense of control, I don't really want an immutable ledger of my thoughts or mood on one day that I may regret later.
dana-edwards
I actually think it may be a design flaw to store everything permanently on the blockchain. Smarter would be to give access control rights to the owner of the power.
Why not use a simple DHT with permissions?
tinfoilfedora
Any public forum needs both edit and delete features to survive and not turn into a giant pile of broken or incorrect duplicate posts. It will completely ruin SEO and search engine results if left this way. Delete would also help reduce blockchain bloat
bluechoochoo
Would be nice to at least delete posts at cosmetic level

I believe in the blockchain as a great technology, but I think it's not really the best tool for user generated content, like here on steemit.
No one really wants his post to be kept forever in the blockchain, for many, many reasons we could easily figure out.
I think that a very visible advice about this way of storing data should be displayed to users before publishing any single post (we can't expect that every user has time and interest to read the legal disclaimer which is basically for layers and other few people).
Our posts are linked to our social media accounts too, with so many issues about privacy, right to delete own content, inappropriate content which may lead to legal problems, copyrighted content, etc.
I hope the developers may re-consider this problems and give some feedback to the community.
Hah, good advice :)
This post has been ranked within the top 80 most undervalued posts in the first half of Dec 18. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $3.39 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.
See the full rankings and details in The Daily Tribune: Dec 18 - Part I. You can also read about some of our methodology, data analysis and technical details in our initial post.

I accidentally posted from the wrong account a month or so ago. As soon as it published, I knew what I had done. But, even so, I couldn't delete. Someone had commented on it that fast. So I had to use whiteout.
Yeah, I agree that we should have it as an option, at least until someone votes or comments on it.
By the way...
Yes, I think you can delete your own comment, as long as no one replies to it. Once that happens, your comment no longer has the delete option.
too bad...so sad...it's not happening.
this is the block chain...everything you post is permanent.
While that is true. I still suggest we need a delete button to explain that fact. Otherwise we end up with endless posts (like I've demonstrated) asking people where the delete is, and how to delete. :)
Steemit is still in beta. It says so up in the top left hand corner. I expect there will be a LOT of changes coming soon. Perhaps you would like Busy ? It will be in beta in februrary.. Don't misunderstand. I'm not suggesting that you leave or anything...far from it. We need as many 'early adopters" as we can get. I'm merely pointing out that there are BIG CHANGES on the horizon.
