Calling all Spanish translators: Help me make multi-lingual instructions to help the homeless learn to use Steemit!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

The other day I made an article about helping the homeless. One of the commenters, currently homeless, told me that he had no use for the sort of short-term help that my ideas entailed.

What he wanted was opportunity. What better opportunity do you know of than Steemit? Even most homeless still have phones, usually new enough that they can access the internet. If not, there's internet access in libraries.

Already, a homeless man made enough money on Steemit to purchase an RV. Steemit has proven its power to elevate people out of poverty, as it connects those with authentic human experiences who are suffering with an audience which craves reading about those experiences and is eager to help.

However, what do you do when there is a language barrier? The number one problem I run into when trying to tell the homeless I encounter about Steemit (after giving them a burger and some money so they'll be more willing to listen to some stranger blab to them about an unfamiliar website) is that many do not speak English well enough to understand what's being described. Almost always it's Spanish that they speak, which makes sense given the demographics of homelessness in the US.

Once they actually learn to use Steemit, it's less of a problem as there will naturally be some percentage of users who also speak Spanish or whatever other language who can read and upvote their posts. The problem is communicating to them what Steemit is, why they should take it seriously, and how to get started. Below is my first stab at those instructions.

"Steemit is a social media site like Reddit, where you can post writing, photography, artwork or anything other people might find interesting. The main difference is that on Steemit, when people upvote what you have shared, you are paid. You receive cryptocurrency called "STEEM", a sort of digital token which can then be exchanged for US dollars and deposited right into your bank account. If you have heard of Bitcoin, it's very similar to that.

To get started, first go to www.steemit.com and register there. It requires that you have an existing Reddit or Facebook account to confirm your identity. Once your account has been made, you can make an introductory post. These are very important! It's your debut on this site. Make sure to include a photo of yourself holding a sign that says "hi Steemit!" so they know you are who you claim to be.

This is as simple as taking a selfie with your phone, then uploading it to a site like https://ipfs.pics/ and then posting the web address of the image it gives you right into the body of text where you're writing your post. If you did it right, the picture will appear in the preview under your post as you're writing it. That's how it will look after you submit.

But, don't forget tags! Right under the body of text, there is a "Tag bar" which says in faint grey text "Tag (up to 5 tags), the first tag is your main category". This is where you put in words related to what you are posting so it is more easily searchable, and more people will see it. Because this is an introductory post, be sure to include "introduceyourself" without quotes as the first tag.

Besides the photo, include a written description of who you are, all about your life and how you wound up in your current situation. Talk about what you hope to accomplish here, what you plan to post in the future, that sort of thing. It's important it be a good amount of writing, but not excessive.

You can post up to 4 articles per day. Between mid day and 6pm is a good time to post. Do not be discouraged if you don't make money right away! Often it takes many weeks to see your first significant return. Be persistent! Once you get noticed and accumulate a large following, Steemit becomes very financially rewarding for relatively little work, compared to what you would have to do for the same amount of money in a conventional job.

Even just posting one thing per day is enough. That's fine, if posting more would interfere with your other efforts to secure employment, housing and so on. It's fine to regard this as a gamble, as it sort of is. But if you do invest a little time each day into posting interesting, worthwhile writings (always with a photo! That helps visibility of your article) then you may soon bring in enough money from Steemit alone to live on.

This is for real. It is not a scam, as it costs nothing to participate. You therefore cannot lose money this way, only make it. It's just a question of how much you will make, and at what rate. Once you have accumulated a good amount of money in your Steemit account and wish to withdraw some, you will need a Coinbase account (https://www.coinbase.com). Ask around for a tutorial in Spanish for converting your STEEM into US Dollars.

This should be enough to get started. I urge you to take it seriously as a potential way to make money, as a great deal of people are already making a living from it. It's real money, it can improve your life, you just have to take a chance on it and devote a little bit of time to it each day."

This text, once translated, can be printed out and distributed along with a mcdonalds burger and $5. Just something to convince them you mean well, that they get something out of it whether they read the card or not, and to make it stick out in their memory.

I could just plug this into Google translate but I was hoping for something more polished and readable for someone who only speaks/reads Spanish at a high level. It will also be more persuasive if it's well written, not the mangled result that computer translation usually produces.

I will be happy to pay $50 to whoever produces a translation of this text and can prove they have a background in Spanish translation (as I don't speak or write it I will be unable to judge the quality myself). I am also open to any tips for improving the clarity of the instructions and/or making them more concise.

EDIT: I've found a translator! Thanks for the attention though. I will post the translated message when it's done.

It's a video and I wanted text, but it's helpful, I will still shoot some Steem your way. :)

I've actually had a friend come forward who is bilingual, she's gonna do the text for me. I didn't even think to ask.

use the text and use the video link is quite well explained, but I advice you to prepare another text, to reply the million dollars question, what is steem, what is steem power and what is steem dollars, were the money comes from and all that questions that people who is not familiar with blockchain technology ask,Let me know how you go at any Spanish projects that you potentially have, I have some good projects too so keep in touch and please have a look my music videos and random post! I have been involved with Crypto since 2009 wen BTC did his debut, so I am very familiar with Blockchain tech projects. Steem actually could be the Blockchain Killer app!!!!! we will see!

Thanks for your generosity shooting some Steem my way! it will help for my future projects, this is all about in the Steem economy and the Steem world, helping each other to make this world a better place to live.

Here is the translation Alex:

No te desilusiones si no haces dinero inmediatamente!!
