Advertising Campaigns for the Steem Platform?
It's getting a little bit hard to try and keep up with all the different initiatives for improving the Steem platform. It seems like there's a new group being formed every day and keeping track of all of them is proving to be a daunting endeavor.
Here's a list of the most prominent groups that I'm aware of:
- Steem Business Alliance
- Steem Proposal System/Steem.DAO by @blocktrades
- Steem Alliance - A Steemit Backed Community Governance Organization
After reading through all these posts, I was particularly interested in the Steem Business Alliance proposal, regarding marketing and promoting the Steem blockchain. I'd very much like to help fund or organize different advertising campaigns on many platforms such as Google Adwords, Facebook & cryptocurrency-related ad networks.

Lately I've noticed that there are very few people joining Steem and the overall activity on the platform could be a lot better. Ideally I'd like to see thousands of new people join Steem every day and crowdsourcing a wide-scale marketing effort might be the best way to achieve this.
Utopian Visibility Category
As far as I know, it's already possible to get rewarded for running ad campaigns, since Steem is included in the Visibility category whitelist on Utopian. I haven't seen too many people making use of this and I've personally been put off a little bit by the arguably difficult process.
In theory, it should be possible to promote the Steem platform without spending too much money on it, since you get partially paid back through a Utopian upvote.
Since @utopian-io is a member of the Steem Business Alliance, I hope that they improve the existing Visibility category, so more people would be inclined to use it for promoting Steem through ad campaigns.
Public Resources
Creating effective adverts can be quite difficult, even regular text-based ads need an enticing message to increase click-through rates. It would be beneficial for the crowdsourced promotion of Steem if public resources were made available for people to use in their individual advertising campaigns.
There should really be a central place where people can collaborate on creating the perfect advertising resources, which other people can then use for free. I'm thinking of banners in all different sizes or text presets for Facebook or Adwords advertising.
Comparing the results of each promotional resource can help with fine-tuning each advertisement campaign and it prevents people having to 'reinvent the wheel' by designing new ads from the ground up.
More Crowdfunding for Steem Ad Campaigns
Starting new advertisement campaigns requires quite a lot of funds. Here on Steem we have the option of crowdfunding the promotion of the Steem platform, through Fundition. I would personally be very willing to fund any efforts to further promote Steem on other platforms.
With crowdfunding also comes a lot of responsibility, if I were to fund any promotional campaign of Steem, I would expect full transparency of how funds are spent. It's also preferable that a group or person with marketing experience manages any crowdfunding campaign.
TL;DR
- Increase paid promotion of the Steem platform through paid advertising.
- Improve the existing Visibility category on Utopian (suggestion).
- Create a public database of free-to-use advertising resources (text, banners, video, etc.).
- Organize crowdfunding efforts for paid advertising of the Steem platform.
The intent of this post is to make people aware of the Steem Business Alliance's goals of promoting the Steem blockchain, as well as add my own thoughts about optimizing paid promotional efforts. I'm always open to join any community that specifically wants to organize advertising campaigns.
Due to being a fairly high-profile member of Bitcointalk, I come into contact with a lot of blockchain-related business owners who offer me cryptocurrency-specific advertising opportunities. I would very much like to take them up on some of these offers, in order to promote the Steem blockchain at my own expense.

Well, I am sure this would be a great idea if the marketing idea is "realistic". What I mean by that is to advertise it as is. If you are not entering Steemit with huge capital it will take TIME AND EFFORT to build up your profile. Too many people join with too big of expectations and quit month or two after they see only cents on their posts.
You have to be active both with writing and in the community in general for you to have any success on Steemit. But, for me, personally, Steemit is way more than just a platform to make some money on. I met so many amazing people on here and might have started to earn an extra buck but I stayed because of the people I met on here through my posts.
I think your idea is great if a marketing campaign is going to be realistic on how things work on Steemit.

You know that Jerry Banfield bought a ton of advertisements for Steemit back in early 2017? Coincidentally (or not) that was also the period when a lot of people joined Steemit. Okay, the higher earning might have had something to do with that as well, but I think the value of his promotions can't be underestimated.

Sure, most people will probably drop-off after a while, but some will stay and might even choose to invest some of their own money into Steem.
I agree with you 100%. I am sure it helped boost Steemit value in general and some of those people actually stayed on Steemit even now when the value of crypto, in general, is low.
All I am saying the advertisements should be realistic so people do not come and think he will make a ton of money right away. It will like in life take time to build a great blog on Steemit and following. :)
Yes, it’s all about managing expectations
I think a lot of the barrier for me is just the overall low price of crypto currencies in general now. It is hard enough to get people to understand cryptos in general, then add to that the low prices and they can't honestly see it being worth their time. It is too bad for them, but I can understand where they are coming from. I don't want fool anyone into thinking they are going to join Steem and be an instant success. When you show them a story and they ask how much you got paid for this well crafted masterpiece and you say $.40 they are going to laugh and say thanks but no. I don't know as though there is way to change that though.

@daan, this is a great piece to read! Are you familiar with #promo-Steem. It is a tag where people doing promotional related content for Steem post to. There is a multi proof of brain guild up voting it from the account @steem-ambassador. Maybe this can help a bit with marketing efforts.

Oracle-d has a large team of writers who help blockchain businesses and projects create content on and off the Steem blockchain.
Oracle d has done a lot of crowd marketing initiative for Steem, but as you suggest, we need a place to pool these resources with other communities in order to have more affect.
Database of free resources is a great idea. About a year ago www.promo-Steem.com put a media page together, but it is far from exhaustive. As we build out the Steem business alliance web site, we may be able to displace certain curated content as down loadable for public use for marketing materials

I'll definitely check out @surfermarly's series as well. I've also done some projects with @oracle-d, but I don't think they take on new members atm. Would love to join them eventually though.

The problem atm is the lack of interest by most society in the crypto space... the bubble bursted and the price dropped, people will look at the drop of price and think "it's going to 0" and won't want to come... Imo the cost-benefit of doing a paid promotion atm is not good enough, we should try to promote steem to our friends and family but we should leave the advertisement campaigns for after the reversal of the market, when the interest starts to pick up, early in the bull market...
Regardless of my opinion, I did not know we could get paid by utopian for running add campaigns... Need to check on that for when the bull market restarts, a few google ads and facebook ads and we would get a massive surge in new users!
Promoting, Steemit with ads is the way to go. Very few people even know we exist. Took a while for bitcoin to be a household name. All products advertise.
