That proud moment when your kid makes the regional, state or provincial team is a milestone for any parent. But the enthusiasm and the Olympic Dream is bound to unravel after your third visit to the federation governing whatever sports discipline your kid excelled in. (Although in fairness the admin staff are more helpful in person than on the phone.)

I know everybody has a different experience in life and I am only going to tell you about my experience. At the national swimming body there was a woman who spoke to everyone on the phone, but nobody ever saw her in person. In an era of email, she preferred faxes. I bought a fax machine just to make sure Denise (not her real name) would receive my communications - the flip side of hearing her draw a deep breath and saying, “but I can't find the fax” was the emotional equivalent of being thrown from an air traffic control tower and landing face down on a tarmac.

Another federation and governing body finally caved to my request that Olympic caliber athletes need to eat organic healthy food. It came with the caveat that I had to fax weekly grocery invoices for scrutiny before the athletes were refunded. One packet of Lays Chips and a packet of condoms on a bill caused a meltdown. I was lectured on the double standards of wanting a budget for organic food, and yet here this man is buying trans fat saturated chips. And condoms. (Which he didn't plan to eat, let me be quick to say in his defense). Two days and a meeting later the refund was processed. Minus the chips and the condoms. But it was a soul destroying experience.
