Everyday Grammar: Tell, Say, Speak, Talk (based on VOA)
Hello steemians!
Today I would like to make a post for a WARM UP activity which can be used in English lessons based on lessons from VOA "Everyday Grammar".
I am Kaveh and I like to talk.
You don't say. Well, I'm Lucia and I like to tell stories.
Well, you always speak your mind.
📝Examples:
- We talked about the new project.
- Can I talk to you?
According to the Oxford Dictionary TALK - 1️⃣ Speak in order to give information or express ideas or feelings; converse or communicate by spoken words.
📝More examples:
- ‘the two men talked’
- ‘we'd sit and talk about jazz’
- ‘it was no use talking to Anthony’
- [with object] ‘you're talking rubbish’
▶️Synonyms:
📝Examples:
- She speaks four languages.
- Professor Reid spoke about climate change.
According to the Oxford Dictionary: SPEAK - 1️⃣ Say something in order to convey information or to express a feeling.
📝More examples:
- ‘in his agitation he was unable to speak’
- ‘she refused to speak about the incident’
▶️Synonyms: talk, say, say anything, say something
📝Examples:
- She didn't tell me her sister was in town.
- I told you about the movie plot.
According to the Oxford Dictionary: TELL - 1️⃣ [reporting verb] Communicate information to someone in spoken or written words.

- What did Sally say?
- Tom said (that) Jimmy was sick.
According to the Oxford Dictionary: SAY 1️⃣[reporting verb Utter words so as to convey information, an opinion, a feeling or intention, or an instruction.
