The Value of Leveraging Your Social Network
In life, one of our most valuable resources is our social network.
Our friends, family, and associates are what give our lives the most meaning. Creating shared experiences is incredibly rewarding and is invaluable in the pursuit of a happy life.
But in terms of getting what we want out of life, our social network can be a gateway to the things we want to accomplish. Often, people come out of school and are taken aback when their newly christened credentials don't carry the weight they thought it would.
A wide-reaching social network can do more than most degrees or certifications ever could.
The value of knowing others who are involved in the same field/study/interest is obvious. If you want to get somewhere in a field like real estate, it helps to know the people who have already succeeded and can show you the ropes. If you're trying to make a name for yourself in an artistic pursuit, knowing others can help you get more shows, attract more fans, and can help you in many other intangible ways.
I write all of this because I've witnessed how important it is to network and reach outside of my established circle. I may have a potential job opportunity because I decided to attend a friend of a friend's work party.
Leverage your network for what it's worth.
I don't mean to say view your friends and family as just a resource, but it's ok to utilize it for your benefit. In fact, that's truly the smart thing to do, as it can provide new paths and opportunities beyond what you thought was possible.
I had no idea I would attend a random company's work party until a few hours before it began, and low and behold it has led to the potential of steady writing work.
If you find yourself in a rut whether with your career or social life, expanding your network will have immeasurable benefits. And leveraging this network will inevitably lead to opportunities you never imagined, which can alter your life's trajectory significantly.

I was more referring to your network in 'real life', but the value of your online social network is also something to keep in mind.
