The Importance of Constantly Getting Out of Our Comfort Zones
On a whim, I went Skiing today at Keystone to take advantage of the end-of-the-season snowstorm that hit the mountains today. During one of my chairlift rides, I recorded this video about why it is critical to constantly get out of our comfort zones.
I recently watched an Anarchast episode with Judd Weiss and in it he mentions a quote that really resonated with me. It is this:
"Comfort makes cowards of us all" - Mark E. Gerber
If we stay in our comfort zones for too long, the world shrinks and we become a victim of our own inability to reach outside of ourselves. The best times in life are when I have pushed myself to do something I was afraid or uncomfortable doing.
Have you ever regretted doing something that made you fearful? I'll bet as long as you're still alive to reflect on the memory, the answer is no.

So true Colin! Outside of your comfort zone this is where the real growth happens. Physically, psychology, emotionally, anyway you can do it you should go for it. I just did kambo yesterday and it was out of my comfort zone for sure. Throwing up toxins and nearly fainting not very comforting. Coming out the ceremony I felt so joyful and at peace, it was extremely satisfying. I would like to say it doesn't have to be so extreme as that. There are countless ways to get out of your comfort zone. Try something new that you always wanted to do. Even something like musical instrument. Talk to someone you normally wouldn't talk to. Try some social experiments in a city or town. You'll realise all these things seem so scary but once you do them and finish them you realise they are actually quite fun. Your mind will often limit you and keep you in fear, but you never know until you try something what will come from it.
It certainly helps keep life exciting to challenge yourself to engage in new activities outside of your normal routine.
I'm somewhat obsessed with doing it a lot of the time, though I always feel like I could be doing more.
you limit yourself in the simplest, in the everyday much more in fulfilling your dreams
right on! i can really resonate with what you're saying here.
totally! on point. we need to keep going to the places that scare us (to use a pema chodron book title and tibetan phrase) to really keep growing and living as humans. anything less is a slow death!!
Thanks! In the words of Tony Robbins: If you aren't growing, you're dying.
Progress requires discomfort and growing pains.
very cool video, keep it like that
