Podcast Wednesday: Steal The Stars

in #podcasts6 years ago

This is the first Podcast Wednesday to be about a single podcast, and not a category of podcasts. Not fully done with categories, but it's time to diversify.

I mentioned Steal The Stars in my very first post about podcasts here, but decided it deserves a more in-depth look.

Steal The Stars was the first podcast from Tor Labs, a part of tor.com and a way for the editors of sff publisher Tor to experiment with new ways of bringing science fiction and fantasy stories to readers.

The writer of Steal The Stars, Mac Rogers, is a playwright and a pioneer in serialized audio. His podcasts The Message (which I loved) and LifeAfter (which I didn't love) both paved the way to Steal The Stars. But what is Steal The Stars?

Dakota Prentiss is the chief of security in a private facility guarding the biggest secret in the world: A crashed UFO with an alien that may or may not be alive. The facility has very strict rules about fraternization. Even significant social relationships are not allowed.

Dak has seen some shit. She's definitely killed some people in the service of her country. She is a consummate bad-ass with no relationships to speak of. No one is more surprised than her when she falls in love with the newest member of the security team, pretty boy (who has also seen some stuff and killed some people, this is an elite security team) Matt Salem. And she's just as surprised when he returns her affections.

But what they're doing is against the rules, rules Dak is supposed to enforce. And as the danger of being discovered comes ever closer to becoming reality, Dak decides the only solution is to steal the alien body and sell it - and the very secret of its existence - to a foreign power.

StS is a thriller, a science fiction story, a love story. It's a story about desperation and the lengths people will go to. It's a story about a poorly understood alien life form. There are 14 episodes, and the story is complete.

Listening it, you will basically get, for free, an excellent short science fiction novel performed by a terrific cast. And it's free. I highly recommend listening to it.
