My favorite SFF magazine podcasts

in #podcasts6 years ago (edited)

I've already posted about my favorite serial fiction story podcasts. But if you love short stories, there are a BUNCH of podcasts for that as well. Let's go through some of them!

I'll sort them into two groups. One is for podcasts that are each the audio arm of a magazines One for podcasts which ARE magazines. I'll call the first group "magazine podcasts", and the second group "podcast magazines."

Magazine podcasts

Uncanny Magazine Podcast

Uncanny is my favorite magazine, and has been since launch. The magazine is bi monthly, and the podcast is monthly, so that two podcast episodes cover a significant portion of each issue. In each episode you get one or two short stories, one or two poems, and an interview with one of the wriiters of those works. They have great readers, and it's a terrific overall package.

Lightspeed Magazine

Every week, the excellent Lightspeed Magazine podcast features one story from the magazine. The stories can be very short, or quite long, and they have a variety of great readers, as they have partnered up with a company that produces audiobooks.

Clarkesworld Magazine - Science Fiction and Fantasy

Clarkesworld publishes quite a few stories, and they put all of them on the podcast, with one story per episode. The host is also the narrator in this case, which is terrific for some stories and doesn't work as well for others. But the fiction quality is consistently high.

Podcast magazines

Podcastle

Original fantasy stories and reprints (respeak?) alike are featured on the venerable Podcastle, which has been around for nearly a decade now. It is one of the three genre specific podcasts produced by Escape Artists, which also produces the science fiction Escape Pod (the original, over 12 years old) and horror podcast Psuedopod. Note that "The Podcastle" is an entirely different podcast. Look for the above graphic when you search on your podcatcher.

Cast of Wonders

The newest member of the Escape Artist family (and by "new," I mean a podcast with over 280 episodes) isn't genre specific: It's age specific. It's the YA member of the family, aimed at younger readers. It features the same high quality as the rest of the pods on the network.

Addendum: All of these podcasts and magaziens are listener supported. While they are all labors of love (no one is making bank off of sff podcasts in 2018), they are produced by some of the finest talents in sff and deserve support. If you fall in love with any of them, consider supporting them in any of the ways provided. Subscriptions, donations, or Patreon.
