Little Monsters - Part 37: Huntsman Spider!

in #photography7 years ago

That was a BIG spider!
The Huntsman spider in Japan has a leg span of about 100mm to 130mm, though the body is only 20mm-30mm long. The one I luckily spotted in my garden was still on the smaller side, probably 80mm to 100mm for its leg span.

The patterns on the spider are really quite beautiful, the black cicrles have a slight blueish tinge.
It is likely still behind that planter.
Despite being a large spider with extremely long legs, they are quite flat and able to get into very narrow spaces.

Huntsman spiders are nocturnal hunters and do not build webs but rather chase down their prey. Though it is a nocturnal hunter it has rather poor eyesight, instead it relies on vibration to detect it's prey, and it's long legs to speedily chase it down. They primarilly dine on insects such as crickets and cockroaches.
Godspeed (not so) little monster!

I've listed the series so people can appreciate more than the current post. I think I'll need to make the list more compact though; it's getting kind of long!

great article...i can remember once in the outback of Australia where we worked,a mate of mine opened a cable pit-lid......then a huntsman was chasing him for about 5-10m...our whole team laughed.....the other guy didn't think it was funny.....lol....never forget that.....

Haha, and now I've laughed too!

...very good...just imagine how we laughed when we saw him running away from a huntsman spider........

cheers

That's nightmare in real life!!! :o

Thanks for your support! You only have to worry if you're a cricket though!

Nice shot, that reminds me my year in Australia ^^

Indeed, there's plenty of creepy things there!

Man, I hate spiders lol

But they're so cool! :P

You have a point there friend lol

Spiders give me the creeps! This one's pretty cool though :) . It really should be named the leopard spider.

It does have a beautiful pattern on it!
