DEK Photography: Put Some Light on It
Flat photography is the enemy of the photographer. Photos with no highlights or dark areas look two dimensional. As this photo would have been, if it wasn't for the single beam of light making the subject pop from the background.

The funny thing with art is that whomever you ask about your best work, they will show you a different photo from your portfolio. But then again, this means that you have hundreds of best works, instead of just one :D

I noticed this recently. There was a storm and suddenly the sky turned pitch black and at that point I noticed that I could see many building more clearly, something like the building suddenly started to emmit light.
Yes, the black canvas of the sky makes anything with some light on it stand out!
