Ruskeala - Italian quarry

Today there will be a lot of stone. There will be too much stone. There will be only one stone. The fact is that we are going to the Italian quarry

Here are traces of marble extraction in two different ways. Traditionally, the rock was drilled to the desired depth, gunpowder was poured into the holes and blown up. You see traces of these Boers in the photographs. The edges of the pieces were not even. Over them began to work stonecutters.

Here is another story. To get such a smooth wall, the rock was sawn with cables. Cars from Italy worked here. Therefore, this quarry is called Italian.

After the explosions, many small stones and crumbs remained. All this went for processing in the furnace. Marble was burned for lime. They also received crushed stone, crumbs and small blocks for various trifles. Several stoves worked. Now pipes and some fragments of buildings have been preserved from the furnaces. There may be a museum on this territory.

The extraction of marble blocks using wire sawing machines was carried out from 1974 to 1986. After this work was stopped and all quarries and mines were closed. Today we have a beautiful Mountain Park.
