EMOTIONAL HIBERNATION - (Notes to self)

I once said in one of my poems that "Emotion is a human addiction, we chase the highs and suffer the lows" This is true to some extent. We feed on emotions in their different forms either positive or negative.

Our world is filled with so many potential stimuli that can sway our emotions and response. We naturally react to Issues surrounding us through our emotions, then our thoughts and action.

I really don't know why but today's society has shifted into an emotionally based one, In the era of lawsuits and trigger warnings, It has become very easy to be offended or upset at issues going on in our different lives.

I'm a humble student of emotional intelligence, I don't claim to know everything but I try my best to understand and read human psyche, I also perceive emotion as a form of energy.

After typing that paragraph, I did some research to back my claims and found out that the word "emotion" is actually almost synonymous with energy. How about that lol.

The Latin derivative for the word emotion, ‘emotere’, literally means energy in motion. source

I also believe, everything that changes can also be likened to seasons, that is why I used the word Hibernation, some animals are known to hibernate during the harsh winter, remaining inactive for some periods of time to save energy.

Emotions just like every other form of energy can also be spent and we sure spend a great deal of them, any sane person in today's society should feel emotions not just to personal issues but to societal and environmental issues.

But there comes a time when we must realize when we are spending too much emotions on things, recognizing that point could save us from getting drained emotionally.

INDIFFERENCE - THE EMOTIONAL SHIELD

There are phases in my life where I feel Indifferent toward issues so I don't get drained. I believe it comes from the realization that there are somethings that I Just don't have control over. especially things that have already happened.

I can remember when a co-worker spilled coffee on me during a break, keep in mind that work was exceptionally stressful that day as we had lots of customers in the restaurant.

He began to apologize and expected a reaction from me either positive or negative but to his surprise and mine, I didn't show any emotion at all, with a blank face I simply ask him for a napkin to wipe off the mess and told him "no worries."

Looking back at that incident I find it funny remembering his reaction, people don't really know how to react to indifference we are so used to feeding off on emotions that it becomes unreal when we come across someone that is indifferent towards our actions.

In conclusion, I believe that emotional hibernation can protect us when we face uncontrollable situations, Sometimes it can be hard to remain positive (which is also an emotion).

Maybe emotional hibernation in form of indifference can be helpful to us when things don't go our way. It is almost synonymous with the feeling of "meh, whatever".

Lol, Thanks for reading friends. see you next time :-)

I think I'll have the same reaction with you. I'm always calm and sometimes smile at them that it's okay no worries whenever someone accidentally does unlikely things to me given that they will ask for an apology right away and nicely. However, if that someone acts as if nothing happened or apologize in a sarcastic way with eyes that are looking at me indifferently, then the dragon mode will be activated and my eyebrows might reach the sky in no time. If I wasn't able to confront that someone like I was late to realize or react regarding to his/her actions, then I'll be uneased for a day or a couple of days.

Thanks for your input. Emotional Hibernation or Indifference, is very useful in saving our emotional energy so we don't get drained. Balance is indeed the key. am glad you enjoyed my post :-)

i think accepting and "hibernating" in the face of things you can't change is very important. i don't know if being indifferent to world issues is the solution, but I do think focusing on your circle of influence rather than panicking about everything is the key. Something that I myself try to manage. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your input. this philosophy does work best in a localized scenario. like the example I stated. There are also sometimes when we get naturally numb to some overwhelming things, I guess it's a way for the emotional energy to recharge. Thanks for stopping by :-)

You write really well @abmakko . There is so much greatness inside of you.

Thanks so much for your kind words :-)

am Glad you enjoyed my content. thanks a lot :-)

This one is GOLD. Particularly me, I just need to practice indifference.

Thanks for your input. Indifference also doesn't come naturally to me. It just helps me when I become overwhelmed :-)

Emotions are a great topic that is not raised often @abmakko.
Emotions are a natural evolutionary development, they are reactions to inner and outer events. Feeling fearful in a presence of a tiger compels us to run and hide; feeling angry helps us find courage to stand up for ourselves. Positive emotions excite and energies us. But dwelling on emotions is not helpful most of the time. Suppressing emotions is also harmful to our being. A fruit not eaten rots. Taking the middle way, tuning your inner instrument's strings not too tight, but also not too loose produces the best and most beautiful sound. To find this golden middle we must exercise awareness and develop sensitivity, constantly listening, being present from moment to moment.
Strong emotions are very draining. There is nothing wrong with an emotion, we are humans after all, but immature use of emotions bring about suffering. Emotional swings take us nowhere even though it feels we are moving 100 miles an hour, we are just going back and forth, never at rest. Getting off the swing is not easy unless you stop rocking and wait for it to come to a standstill. Perhaps this is what acceptance is. It is not passive, it is not a sign of weakness; contrary it takes awareness and effort . Acceptance (or indifference) is an action.

Thanks for your input. I couldn't have said it better, I like your thoughts
