RE: EMOTIONAL HIBERNATION - (Notes to self)

in #philosophy6 years ago

Emotions are a great topic that is not raised often @abmakko.
Emotions are a natural evolutionary development, they are reactions to inner and outer events. Feeling fearful in a presence of a tiger compels us to run and hide; feeling angry helps us find courage to stand up for ourselves. Positive emotions excite and energies us. But dwelling on emotions is not helpful most of the time. Suppressing emotions is also harmful to our being. A fruit not eaten rots. Taking the middle way, tuning your inner instrument's strings not too tight, but also not too loose produces the best and most beautiful sound. To find this golden middle we must exercise awareness and develop sensitivity, constantly listening, being present from moment to moment.
Strong emotions are very draining. There is nothing wrong with an emotion, we are humans after all, but immature use of emotions bring about suffering. Emotional swings take us nowhere even though it feels we are moving 100 miles an hour, we are just going back and forth, never at rest. Getting off the swing is not easy unless you stop rocking and wait for it to come to a standstill. Perhaps this is what acceptance is. It is not passive, it is not a sign of weakness; contrary it takes awareness and effort . Acceptance (or indifference) is an action.
