New Books Tuesday: April 10

in #news6 years ago

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

This is a pretty great week of releases, with a nice variety of books to choose from.

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

Valente is one of the most unique authors working today, and this novella, which I have only read some of (but will definitely be continuing) is a pretty amazing example of that. A tale of alien invasion where humanity is invited to sing for its existence in the galaxy's version of the Eurovision contest.

Serpent in the Heather by Kay Kenyon

This is the second in Kay Kenyon's series of supernatural spy thrillers set against the backdrop of WWII, and it looks pretty awesome. Disclaimer: Kay is a pal, online and sometimes at conventions.

Circe by Madeline Miller

This Greek myth retelling centering on Circe, the goddess of magic, the original witch of Western mythology. It looks like a very cool feminist retelling of the original tales, and pits Circe against the gods when she has to choose between them and human mortals.

Fire Dance by Ilana C. Myers

This the second in Meyer's high fantasy series of magic, intrigue, and music which started with 2015's Last Song Before Night.

Isle of Blood and Stone by Makiia Lucier

This is an intriguing YA historical Caribbean fantasy where a young mapmaker must set out to try and find the island's two long lost princess, kidnapped 18 years previously.

One Way by Simon Morden

Eight convicted felons are sent on a one way mission to build the first Mars base, but then accidents start happening, and now the leader of the crew, architect and convicted murderer Frank must discover the truth behind them. Sounds like a really cool space mystery, along the lines of Mur Lafferty's Hugo nominated Six Wakes.

What are you looking forward to reading?

Circe sounds amazing. I love feminism, mythology and feminist retellings of mythology, so this is right up my street. 😍

I've already ordered Space Opera. I really liked some of Valentes prior books and the premise of this one sounds just made for me.

Serpent in the Heather seems interesting as well, even if that's normally not my genre.
