Our first fish of the year! WizStead Post #5

in #myhuntingfishing6 years ago (edited)

One reason I'm so excited to get moved back to the farm,
is how quick and easy it is to go fishing!

  • Gather up our stuff and in just a few minutes we can be drowning worms.

Date: March 15th, 2018
Time: about 5PM
Location: northcentral, MO about 15 miles south of Iowa

Weather: 64F

  • with a cold front moving in giving us rain the next day.
  • a bit of wind, but not too bad as you can see in some of the pics...

Bait & Tackle:

  • Wife, Sylvia decided to drown worms.
    • Presentation: #6 hook about 3' below a bobber
  • WizarDave used a Mepps Minnow.
    • Presentation: Just reeling in fairly slow did the best.
      • I did all the fancy jigging and such but mainly just a slow roll was better.
  • Both using ultralight poles with 4# test
    • We bought these for trout fishing at Lake Taneycomo near Branson...

Fishing report:

  • Wife Sylvia = 2 bluegill
  • WizarDave = 6 largemouth bass
    • We fished about an hour,
so catching about 1 bass every 10 minutes.
      • Quite fun!

Proving my post was correct!

Where we are fishing

Note the clouds and slight ripple from the wind...

  • On up the hill there is our (going left to right) garage, cellar house and house
    • Up that draw in the middle of the pic kinda going to the left a bit, is where I have been successful hunting morel mushrooms and even a turkey once!

Note how clear the water is

  • This pond usually get pretty murky in the summer...

What to do with fish guts...

I don't normally harvest bass, but I know they are a bit overpopulated in this pond.

  • so I harvested 3 of them for Friday's supper.
    • I didn't think about it in time, or I would have kept those bluegill.
      • You can see they are a bit overpopulated and stunted...

My other hobbies include gardening, so I did not want to waste this great fertilizer!

  • Trixie supervised me planting my fish guts.
    • Fish guts are high in nitrogen, bones = calcium,
      • Abracadbra! later this year when it warms,
I will have 3 hills of zucchini right here!

AWESOME fishing day! Nice to see people outdoors enjoying a beautiful day!

Thanks @goldendawne! We had fun!!!

Great post! I hope to get to do some fishing soon. Glad to see someone from MO on here, I lived in Belton, MO for many years but just moved across the state line to Overland Park, KS. My step-son has a place in Gunn City, MO that I hope to do some fishing at soon.

Thanks.

  • Cool! I've lived in Kansas too. Wish I would have bought the lifelong deer hunting permit back in the 80's when I lived there.
    • A friend I used to work with crappie fished KS quite a bit. One time he brought in a 3# crappie to show me. That was amazing. I thought it was a nice largemouth at first.
      • Best of luck to you guys when you get to go!!!

The first fish of the year you had a great time out.

Hi @mhm-philippines, do you fish there?

  • So, Daddy William, what kind of fish do you have? Any largemouth bass?

Hello, @wizardave. There are many fish here. Six inch long shrimp also! The Philippines is made up of 7,129 Islands. Water everywhere! Salt water fishing and fresh water! I am here preaching the Gospel, so my main focus is “fishing for men”, as Jesus said.
I have not seen any bass, but I have not yet been everywhere. We have a fish like a catfish here. I have caught some 20 inches long.
The fishing in the sea is where the big ones are. I have not been, but my wife’s brother in law had a rig with 30 pound test line on and could not turn around a fish he has hooked.
My problem, I need a rig meant for salt water. My fresh water rigs all seize up after a few dips in the salt water. I have made a few casts while the kids were swimming.
My son just turned 4 and we will be fishing together soon. Nothing like a father son outing!

Daddy William

Awesome post! Looks like a great time. I would love to learn how to mushroom hunt myself.

Thanks @nickbuha we had a blast!

  • Basically just go for a hike and look down while you walk.
    • Pay particular attention around fallen trees or where someone has cut down a tree.
      • They seem to like old wood and sawdust.
  • We moved to Marshall, MO right before my Kindergarten year. Dad cut an old tree down next to the house. The next year we had a washtub full of morels! 😎
    • I usually go along creeks, not so much down by the creek but up on top.
      • Local lore has it that the ditches that run east and west are better than north and south, but I've not personally found much difference.

Oh I do love a good fishing report and it sounds like you guys had a lot of fun! I'm impatiently waiting for the weather to warm up here (Virginia mountains) so I can go catch some local trout and smallmouth bass. My fishing fever is getting high! Thanks for the great post!

Thanks!!! We did! We did!

  • We have to travel about 5 hours for trout fishing.
    Lucky you having them local.

My fishing fever is getting high!

haha I can relate. I had been hounding the wife a bit for us to get out.

  • too cold... too windy... too tired... haha
    • then we hit one really nice afternoon... no excuses... and bam the rest is history!

Looks like you had quite the time while fishing. All the ponds by me are so pressured that I'd be happy with a bass an hour.

What do largies taste like? I've never eaten freshwater bass. More of a fan of catching and cooking saltwater fish myself.

We did have a blast!

  • I'm lucky to live where I do. There are numerous ponds. Some get hit pretty heavy. Some are kind of hidden so not much pressure...
    • They are a nice white filet. Only the larger ones (I'm gonna say 5#+) have a stripe of dark meat which I cut out...
      • I'm gonna call it just a normal fish flavored filet. I can't much tell the difference between bass, crappie or walleye. Now, I do think catfish have a unique flavor...

That's why I miss living in the mountains. I had a few ponds I'd frequent on my fourwheeler. Pretty sure I was the only one to ever fish in a few of them, caught something almost every cast.

Catfish is a very distinct taste for sure. I'll give bass a shot one of these days.

If I am not mistaken, you are the first (other than @myhuntingfishing) to post from the My Hunting & Fishing Forum! Thank you!
