10 Spacetastic Facts About Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
Hello movie marauders! The sequel to Independence Day, Independence Day: Resurgence, was released June 20, 2016. It got a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, and made $389.7 million at the Box Office (Independence Day (1996) got a 60% and made $817.4 million). Jeff Goldblum (who plays David Levinson) returns in this movie. This film was not very good, but I liked the action and aliens in it. An Independence Day 3 is confirmed, and will have the same director as the first 2 films, Roland Emmerich. Let's take a look at some fun facts about Independence Day: Resurgence!!
1. Liam Hemsworth (who plays Jake Morrison) said that the making of the movie was stopped for 4 days because the production ran out of money.
2. The sequel got $90 million more than the first film (which had a $75 million budget/highest grossing film of 1996).
3. Fox would not give Will Smith a $50 million salary for 2 sequels to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller.
4. Writer Dean Devlin had originally written a script (paid for by Fox) for a sequel after the success of the first movie. Devlin did not finish the script (he thought it wasn't as good as the first movie), and decided to just give the studio its money back. Director Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin decided to write another script 15 years later because they felt they had a story in mind.
5. During the shoot in New Mexico, Jeff Goldblum (who plays David Levinson) would have jam sessions to kill the time between set-ups.
6. The size of the new mothership is as big as Jupiter's Moon Europa (3,000 miles or 4,830 kilometers in width). In the movie, David says that the ship is so big that "it has its own gravity."
7. Independence Day: Resurgence was originally 1 of 2 sequels to Independence Day (1996). They were both going to be called Independence Day Forever Part 1 and Independence Day Forever Part 2.
8. Director Roland Emmerich said that they chose the word resurgence in the title because it has to do with a post-world that has come together to fight a common enemy--which is a resurgence.
9. Jeff Goldblum has worked with both Liam and Chris Hemsworth (Liam-Independence Day: Resurgence/Chris-Thor: Ragnarok).
10. The teaser posters showed the aliens attacking landmarks all over the world (Big Ben-England, Eiffel Tower-France, Esplanade Theaters-Singapore, Statue of Liberty-United States). According to the movie, David Levinson said that "They like to get the landmarks."
