Art & Mediocrity: A (VERY) Short Treatise On Crimes Against Art and Taste

in #michelangelo7 years ago (edited)

We live in a time of impressive mediocrity. Not a time of David & Michelangelo:

This applies to many areas of life, but, as an artist, I want to focus on the arts. Because it is bad.

I actually ended up on Steemit in large part because if I typed in #writer on other social media all that came up were choppy, shoddy journal entries pretending to be poetry with a little not-so-creative spacing on eye-rolling black backgrounds. I had so few people to authentically connect with that I was starting to shrivel.

And, of course--at the risk of sounding elitist, although that really is nowhere near the goal--people who think that a melodramatic journal entry with no real poetry is art are of course not going to be the kind of people I can hope to really dialogue and share my work with. These are not Dostoevsky or Raphael or Aristotle people, or even just people who appreciate excellent woodworking and field-picked flowers on the table with the sunlight streaming in. These are inspiration-quotes-without-any-bite-or-meaning-on-stock-images people.

In other words, rather than a community I can go to, they are the antithesis I must run from.

So you may see my predicament.

(Thank you, Steemit. Seriously. I am so hopeful today that I will uncover wonderful artists in the corners of this new platform. Pleeeeease come my way, serious writers and artists. I need you like I need water.)

Most singer-songwriter work is the same quality—terrible lyrics, and no concern for taste, beauty, aesthetic, or real value and meaning. The same goes for every other current artistic medium.

And don’t get me wrong—I'm not entertainment-opposed. Entertainment has a place. Truly entertaining work is no problem for me, provided it is actually entertaining and.. good.

It’s just the stuff that is bad in any category that I have a problem with.

And most of it is BAD. Especially most of what is trying to be “deep.” Like, puke-worthy bad. Like, causing-me-physical-pain bad. Like, wow-I-don’t-know-how-to-even-pretend-this-isn’t-torture-to-read/hear/observe-even-though-you’re-my-friend bad.

This is agony for an artist.

There is so little originality and actual artistry in the modern world that I feel soul-starved.

I walk down the street, and I am met by ugly billboards, screaming advertisements, utilitarian buildings, and an overabundance of concrete.

I go to church, and the hymns are bland and embarrassing to the point of nausea.

I go online and everyone--the artists worst of all--is posting this week’s cliché phrase and not bothering with grammar or spelling or real creativity at all.

Starving, I say.

But here’s the thing. It is very hard to be honest about the severe lack of taste in the world, because it is so rampant. It’s everywhere. Almost everyone you love has terrible taste, and for you to even call some of it into question makes you an insensitive ogre.

Again: enter Steemit. I cannot begin to tell you how freeing it is to feel free to finally write freely. I am not limited by the suffocating expectations of those I’ve known for years who, while often kind, wonderful, virtuous, truly better-than-me people, are steeped in dross and sentimentality and can’t distinguish between was is excellent and what is pure whale blubber.

We need to find the courage again to say what is good and what is not. We need to be able to offer authentic thoughts and criticism on written and artistic works. And we need to do it quickly.

I say this as someone who was destined for torturing the world with my painful melodrama had it not been for one good teacher. And I say it as an admitted work in progress. We don't need to be unnecessarily mean about it, but we must be honest.

If we don’t find that courage (and sanity, frankly), we have officially forfeited the milliennia of greatness that is our birthright and inheritance, right back through the Renaissance and Christendom through to the great ancients and beyond.

Please let us not bequeath only Miley and soap operas and adult finger-painting to the coming generations.

Thank you, Steemit, for being somewhere that I can actually, finally speak.

Thank you for sharing this post with me.
Reading this actually made me feel even more enthusiastic about this website.

I'm an old man and perhaps I can't quite grasp the concept of social media such as twitter, instagram or even the facebook almost everyone my age seem to enjoy very much... I find them shallow and although I respect that it can bring some sort of enjoyment and connection with others, it's just not the type of community I want to be a part of.

I live in a society and a country that's in shambles, and even if at some point Venezuela did seem like it'd have some sort of future now that idea it's just in the trash... Here the artists and cultural identity are slowly dying.

The new youth is more interested in pop culture, technology and other frivolities, but in a way, I'm sure there is also beauty in them.
Sometimes my daughter, who is 19 years old, shows me some new movie, a new show or music, and then I get that there is still good stuff out there, one just has to look for it.

I write stories that I like to share with some of my friends or family, and even if I'd always loved doing so, I never thought I would a place to share them, so finding this website was also mindblowing for me.

I just followed you, I hope you'll do the same and maybe read my stories and writings as I post them.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. It's heartening! I'm very sad to hear about your country.. in different ways, it is happening all over the world. We really must make a concerted effort to support each other as artists and try to turn this ship around--or at least keep producing little beautiful things for people like your daughter to find!

Just following back--I actually meant to before, so I'm glad you said something. I thought I already had!

Take care. I look forward to your posts.

You're welcome!

I love that part about almost everybody having bad taste -- it almost made me bite my tongue laughing!!! It's so true, yet nobody dares to say it!

haha! I know I do sometimes.. maybe there is a place once in a while for it: but only if we admit it's bad! :)

True: Professional kitsch is acceptable (a la Frank Zappa, i.e.) :D

Oh. My. Gosh. You poor, poor person!! You're like ME!! 0_o

You have my condolences. And my pity. And my sympathy. And every other shred of human compassion-related emotion I can muster.

How ever have you survived the universal anti-perfectionist barbecue?! Hiding your judgement like contraband? Or by the garden hose of speaking your mind and watching everyone leave the room in disgust? Have you bought stock in the major tissue companies? Or did you actually, somehow, manage to somehow survive it unscathed? ... Are you still in society?

o_o

Lol! Barely surviving, frankly. And you?? That's why I'm so relieved to have found Steemit and have a place to share my thoughts and my work (I'm a singer-songwriter--threw up a couple of videos already if you want to take a look). Hoping to find more people like you to share with!

I'm a hermit. And a writer, which often amounts to the same thing.-laugh- I'm also trying to survive, but not so much society, as other things.

Right now, though, I'm just trying to survive this headache. I think it might be allergies, because it's particularly miserable. >_<

Oh, I am so sympathetic.. I have thyroid and autoimmune disease, and have suffered from severe fatigue for years! I'm so grateful for Steemit as an outlet and place to really share, as it's something edifying I can do from home. I am a writer, poet, and singer-songwriter--seen any of my videos? Honestly, so happy to connect with you on here. Let's stay connected as we both grow, okay?

Sorry to hear about your health issues. I can somewhat imagine, though. I'm too poor to find out what's wrong with me, and at this point, in the worst case scenario, it may not do me any good to find out.

Speaking of which, I've been on my computer waaaaaaay too much the last few days, and now I'm hurting pretty badly from it. So I'll probably have to kick myself off of here, for the most part, for the next few days or so. It's a pity, but I've learned that one has to do what one has to do, or one is almost always sorry for not doing it! x_x

But I should be back sooner or later. May peek in, here and there, but I've got to try to behave myself! ^,^

By the way, you have a pretty voice! ^_^ It reminded me a little of the Daughters of Mary. Ever heard of them? They're nuns who do absolutely beautiful singing. You can find them at the link below (I think it might be their official store), and for those whose lives have them often calling to heaven, I can't help but recommend especially their "De Profundis" That one's in latin, but for those who know the verse ("Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord..."), it's a beautiful prayer to sing, and as I said, you probably have the voice for it. (I know that I don't! -laugh-)

http://www.daughtersofmarypress.com/store/store_results.php?Category=22&Section=Music

Their singing is just so heavenly. And such beautiful words to be singing, too!

I wish we could chat more--is there a private feature on here? I want to hear what you issues are, if you wouldn't mind sharing a bit. I might be able to help you find some solutions. I am so very sympathetic with the poverty aspect of illness.. that's a long story for me as well.

I'll try to write more tomorrow!

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a private message feature. Weird, huh?

Went to follow you and.. already had :)

@iceflower and @kayclarity use Steemit.Chat :) It's simple and you can DM each other and pretty much every active Steemit user is there nowadays! Pretty good for networking too! I run the place and its the official chat for Steemit so if you encounter any issues, im generally always around!

I don't know if you would get this over your way, but if you have any interest in the genius that was Leonardo da Vince have a look at this, its a documentary about da Vince, narrated by Peter Capaldi, but its da Vincis actual words read from his books.

It is one of the best things i have ever seen made on TV, it moved me like nothing i have seen in years, honestly just watch and i think you will be blown away. I dont often recommend TV, but this is something that deserves wider exposure.

Did you forget the link? I'm interested!

Oops sorry about hat, have a look here

If you want to,watch on a different device search YouTube for in the mind of leonardo, they have the full documentary.

Thank you! I hope I can make time to watch it!

I laughed as you drove the point home in this post! Fantastic and you have it down nicely!

I go online and everyone--the artists worst of all--is posting this week’s cliché phrase and not bothering with grammar or spelling or real creativity at all.

Couldnt agree more!

But here’s the thing. It is very hard to be honest about the severe lack of taste in the world, because it is so damn rampant. It’s everywhere. Almost everyone you love has terrible taste, and for you to even call some of it into question makes you an insensitive ogre.

It's true. Sometimes I feel we get pulled into it inevitably and you realize a while later that damn. What the heck was I doing?

Pleeeeease come my way, serious writers and artists. I need you like I need water.

Feel free to stalk my blogs haha! :P

The world lives and thrives on mediocrity today. It's all about the instant gratification and very little about putting in a real effort to create something of value to yourself and others. But I guess, mediocrity is quality to most people and even larger number of people are fine with getting just that! I'm glad that there are still people like us who are not 'okay' with the rubbish put out there in the name of being creative!

I had to take a forced break from my work today, hence the delayed response.

Thanks for coming back to it, and for such a great response. I just posted another one on poetry as well. I'm so glad to have people to connect with about these things.

Will take a look shortly. :)

I wrote something very personal yesterday and realised this platform gets more awesome by the day due to the responses I've received on it. I feel humbled and also great at the same time to be able to write and share here. It's fantastic how many people I've connected with through Steemit. I've been here for a year Kay and I can tell you with conviction that I think I've made a handful of life-long friends here from across the world, real people I've had the opportunity to meet via SteemFest in person, spend time with due to the initiatives that I've managed!

Never experienced that in a decade of being on old social media for some reason, in such a big way!

So cool. I'm going to read your recent now :)
