Late Night Steemit Cafe #7: The Mirror Behind the Bar
You enter the cafe as you usually do, tired but drifting. But when you step through the doors you realize something is wrong. The Manager, or whatever or whoever he is, is generally quick to greet you.
This time, there is only silence.
Taking a few cautious steps you call out for him, or anyone else, that might be around but out of sight. But after several moments with no response you sit down on a stool in front of the bar. You've come a long way, but you're in no hurry. Might as well wait a bit.
It's not long, sitting there, before you eye something delicious behind the bar. You grab yourself a glass and help yourself. Gulping it down you realize just how thristy you were, but it's only when you slam down the empty glass that you notice the mirror.
It's behind the bar and between two shelves full of various boxes of tea, liquors, and concoctions you don't recognize. But strangely it is not these that draw your eye, but the mirror. You recall the chamber that The Manager showed you and remember that this is a place that operates by different rules.
Your reflection is different. There's something subtle in its expression. Something intense, dark.
You begin to question your sanity when it's lips start moving. You touch yours just to be sure yours aren't, but your reflections hands stay where they are.
What is it saying? You squint and look closely. Then your eyes widen with comprehension. It is whispering your deepest secret, mouthing it behind the glass.
For a moment you consider breaking the mirror.
But no. The devilish grin on your reflection's face, your face, seems to want that. Instead you get up to go. Your reflection stays seated.
"Goodbye, Traveler."
It mouths the words, but all is still silent. Not daring to look back you leave, praying the you in the mirror behind the bar is gone when The Manager returns.
