Mac & cheese, the awesome comfort food that's both satisfying & brim-full of chemicals

Macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food. It’s so hearty, satisfying, and chock-full of dangerous chemicals.

“Hold on, what??” they ask. Then they give us this easy-to-read summary:

“The ABSOLUTE MINIMUM you need to know, in 50 words or less:
Boxed mac and cheese is high in phthalates because of plastic involved in processing, plus fat content. Phthalates are definitely a cause for concern, especially for infants and expecting females, but threshold doses aren’t known. It’s surprisingly easy to get high doses of phthalates from food, especially in the US.”

People are paying more attention these days to the research on phthalates and testosterone reduction, birth abnormalities, and the like.

  • Phthalates are in a lot of stuff other than mac and cheese boxes

Look where else they use phthalates, other than your mac & cheese!

“Phthalates are the go-to, toxic chemicals used to soften and increase the flexibility of vinyl. Common in synthetic scents, vinyl flooring, mini-blinds and shampoo, soap and makeup, air fresheners and scented candles, phthalates also infiltrate the food system in many ways that go far beyond plastic wrap. They don’t call it the “everywhere chemical” for nothing.

Endocrine disruptors

Perhaps what’s most shocking about this recent chemicals-in-mac-and-cheese report, commissioned by the Coalition for Safer Food Processing & Packaging, is that even some organic mac and cheese products contain these endocrine disruptors. And it begs the question, why is the Food and Drug Administration still allowing food-contact use in the U.S. when many European countries banned phthalates in food and moved on to readily available, safer alternatives?”

Healthier alternatives?

Yep, there sure are. For some great non-toxic alternatives to commercially supplied mac and cheese, check out Chemicals in Mac and Cheese: What You Need to Know.

Hi Gary - I love Mac n Cheese but the boxed stuff just doesn't cut the mustard. Also I've been trying to say Phthalates every since reading it - it's not working :D

Yep, it's definitely the boxed stuff that my post takes aim at. Home made... yum.

Thanks for your (upvoted) comment, Andy.

Gary

I rarely eat the boxed stuff but absolutely love real macaroni and cheese. Yum is right!

I was worried when I started reading this post. But then I saw you were talking about boxed mac and cheese. I would NEVER ever eat that boxed stuff (and the word 'stuff' is really a substitute for a 4-letter word starting with s and ending with t). So I was able to breathe easier. I'd be happy if those boxed products would be taken to a big bonfire and burned!
