The Man With No Ring

in #life6 years ago

This is the story of an epic quest! It may excite you, it could frighten you, and possibly even move to you tears!

Let us begin.

Setting the Stage

Today I had one task that I really wanted to complete: get a package for my wife from the post office while she was out. Simple, right? Not!

We had snow yesterday and I hadn't lifted my windshield wipers, so even though it had been sunny this morning, the snow was still piled on my windshield. I decided to clear it off as much as I could and let the rest just melt while I was working on other things.

The Adventure Begins

I went out without gloves to just brush the snow off. I cleared the windows and even cleared off the hood so the wind wouldn't pick it up and plaster it across my windshield. You see, I'm a big proponent of being able to see while driving. When I was done clearing the snow, my hands were cold and still had some snow on them. Without thinking, I raised my arms, then dropped them quickly and flicked my wrists to get the snow off my hands.

I started to head back inside to warm up when I noticed my left hand felt different, lighter. I felt around with my thumb and only found skin. I looked down at my hand.

My ring was GONE!

The symbol of my love and commitment to the woman who has captured my heart... and it was missing!

Everything Falls Apart

A bit panicked, I began to search the snowy ground. I cleared the snow to expose the bare ground, but to no avail. I retraced my steps to see if it had fallen off earlier, it had not. I again returned to the place I thought it had flown off and methodically checked every inch of the area. No luck.

Just when I was realizing that I might have to tell my wife that it was missing, she called. I didn't know how to tell her. I hadn't payed attention to sitcoms when a character lost his ring. After all, that would never happen to me, right?! Yes here I was.

In hindsight, I don't know why I was worried at all. I know my wife well and we've been through a lot together. When I told her I had lost it, she simply said, "That's ok. I'll help you look for it." I'm blessed to have such an understanding partner.

Reunion

When she got back, she gave me a big hug and we got to looking. Finally, after searching in the cold with no success, we had to give up. I will admit that at one point I was:

  • Crouching/hopping around
  • Looking for a ring
  • Thinking about "my precious"

Yeah, that's the point when I decided to call it quits... with looking for the ring. Not with my wife. We're still together. Thought I should clarify that. Sorry for any confusion.

Below is the area of the quest where I believe I lost the ring. If you can find it, I'll give you 2 SBD. However, it seems unlikely as I scoured the ground and came up empty.
Regardless, I thought you might enjoy seeing the spot that was marked by the "X" on the map.

Off Into The Sunset

So there really isn't a happy ending in terms of finding the ring, but I did get more confirmation of how much my wife loves me and how amazing she is. Even though I lost my ring, it's just a symbol and she still loves me the same. That's a gift itself.

So even though I didn't find the ring, I still feel like a winner.

- Have you ever lost anything valuable?

Tell me about your experience in the comments section below.

- What do you think of the depiction of Ono that the super talented @overkillcoin made for me?!

Sort:

I learned from a Turkish friend that they say something like this: capara.
It means: for exchange that nothing worse happens. The explanation is that you need to pay sometimes with something valuable to you, to make sure nothing bad happens to you or your family. Saying “capara”, always makes me feel better if I lose something I liked or valued deeply.

I have never heard that and it gives one comfort.

It really does. It was in a kibbutz 20 years ago, and I lost a earring I got from my mum. The other volunteers helped searching. But when one of them told me this story in the evening, I could forgive myself and I never forgot the words ( though I might say them wrong).

Yes, it does give a bit of comfort! It's so fun to learn new things like that.

I had not heard that. That's such a cool story. Thanks for letting me know. We should be covered for a while now. :)

Whoa, OMG - and I don't often use "OMG."

But this post hits a little too close to home for me. Just thinking about it evokes that bad-butterfly, queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Rain at the Reservoir - and a Dreaded Ringing Sound ...

So I know what you must have been going through although, I must say, your rendition and story telling skills are far superior!!!

Are you kidding me? You're a talented writer. My heart started racing as I was reading your article. I know that panicked feeling very well.

I still can't believe I did that. I tease my wife about losing things and whatnot, but I was the one who lost his ring! And I don't even really know where it is. I think it came off when I wrung my hands off, but I can't be sure.

That's fortunate that you were able to see the general direction of where yours went. It's not a fun conversation to have with your partner, even if they're as chill about it as my wife was.

Thanks for your comments. I like your writing style, so I take that as a big compliment!

This happened to me right after my honeymoon, but I found it pretty quickly.

The struggle is real! And cold...

Glad you found yours. And yes, the struggle is very real.

I can't say I'm surprised it happened. I liked to fidget with it. I didn't need a fidget spinner, because I had my ring. I dropped it in the sand at the beach and panicked for .8 seconds while I scooped it up. This time I haven't panicked, but man, it feels different and weird not wearing it.

So...
Now you know why I never wear mine (and I still have it), and why I've yet to buy my wife a new one (she lost hers down the sink).

She bought herself something that passes for a wedding ring, because she wanted to wear one, so no worries.

Since you are the man with no name, we could start calling you Gollum if you like? :) Sounds like you were doing a fine interpretation of him.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have been wearing it anyways. It was a little too big. If my wife lost hers we'd probably file an insurance claim. It was more expensive than mine.

My aunt bought a fake ring at a casino in Las Vegas. The stone is enormous. Because she and my uncle are retired, people just assume that they're super wealthy and that the stone is real. It's not. It was $30. Yet she gets many more compliments than she ever did with her real one. Heh

Gollum has his own name, Sméagol. I, however, wander these wastes with naught but mine accoutrements and faithful steed. Oh, and "I got $20 in my pocket!..."

You'll find it next time you have to mow the lawn I bet. jk, hopefully it turns up before that. 😉

I wouldn't be surprised if it hit me in the leg. That'll work out though, because I've been thinking about starting a new fashion trend called "leg ring" where you have a ring embedded in your shin. Ouch!

I lost an bracelet in the sink,it was a small thin bracelet and it went in and I was not able to recover it. My husband saw me in tears and surprised me on My birthday with a New one its special and just like with you and your wife this is an bracelet with a story off love attatched.
Have a Nice evening

Aww, I'm sorry you lost your bracelet, but that's sweet of your husband to get you a new one. And a birthday is a great time to get such a meaningful present.

We're going to be looking for a new one for me. Maybe a cheaper one that fits better.

Enjoy your evening as well. Thanks for stopping by! :)

Ok, @themanwithnoname, I have followed you and upvoted because this is exactly something that would happen to me. I don't know where you are geographically located on the map, but my husband and I are from Canada and he's an avid metal detectorists. I'm certain that you could source a local group in your area and one of them would bite into this, just for the challenge of the hunt. I would start by doing a web-search for a group of detectorists in your area. Many would do it for free, but a small reward or a donation to the group may have half a dozen of them in your drive and front yard, in short order. I know that my husband has done this for more people than I can count on one hand. I hope you find it. ;)

Thanks for following, upvoting, and your suggestion!!! I hadn't even thought of that. It's such a good idea. From the google search I did, there is a club sort of near me. They might have a member or two who would come out and try to find it.
Thanks for the suggestion and for stopping by!

I think that you are in the greater seattle area. Ill have to bring down a metal detector to claim the 2sbd prize

It might be a bit of a drive for you, but if you've got nothing better to do, feel free to come on over.

Although, I have been getting into silver recently, and without a ring, maybe I could get a custom silver ring to replace the missing one. If a few coins come along with the ring, who am I to say no, right?! :D

I guess you probably would have done/said the same thing if your partner was the one that lost the ring?

@overkillcoin makes awesome artworks on Steemit!

Her ring is more expensive than mine was, but she's worth more. I'd probably be looking even harder for her ring though. heh

Yes, @overkillcoin is awesome! He totally made me week by giving me this beautiful green turtle. I love it so much!

I've done this before as well. My ring was fitted in Australia, where my fingers were a bit fatter due to the heat.

In Europe winter, my fingers appear to be stick thin. So, when I take off my gloves I have to bend my fingers so the ring doesn't come straight out.

One time I forgot. I was in the way to work, so I searched around as best as I could. Eventually, I had to give up and go to work.

Later that night at the hotel, I opened my messenger bag that I had on. Somehow, through sheer good luck, the ring had fallen in there!

I think it was the old of the snow that made my finger skinnier too. There's a weight loss tip in there somewhere. Ha ha.

That's great the ring was in your bag all along. You had it safely in your possession and didn't even know.
