TRAGIC FORGETFULNESS
This concept was first used, to my hearing of course, by my "Introduction to Philosophy" Lecturer, Mr. Mark Shenge, in the November of 2015. It was just until recent that I came to grasp it's meaning in full and appreciate it's contextual implications in the works of Innocent Asouzu.
A tragedy is often associated with some sad story. In Literature, if my memory is still loyal and truthful to me, I had been taught three of the types of 'plays', that include: comedy, tragedy and tragecomedy. Comedy refers to those stories that will force your lips open leaving your teeth naked; and sometimes, just sometimes, even forcing the teeth open and exposing the wet nature of the natural towel that never dries. Tragedies are, apparently, in direct contrast to comedies; tragedies strike one with a long face and abandons one in that sublime mood as though one has lost a loved one that cannot be raised from the death. Lastly, Tragecomedies. One may be tempted to say that it falls somewhere between a comedy and a tragedy; you may not be far from the truth. A tragecomedy is a play that combines mood threatening and daunting elements and it is also characterised by happen scenes. That is to say that a tragecomedy combines both elements of a comedy and a tragedy. In sum, anything 'tragic' is sad and sorrowful; somewhat pitiful.
On the other hand, we have forgetfulness - to forget. Imagine that you have been on 'streets and files' for ten (10) years. On this lucky day of yours, you were asked to come for an interview on the 13th day of October. Two (2) days later you were unsure of the date you were given and then you decide to settle for 13th November. I wonder, if when you get there, you will be the Boss conducting the interview. How sad. Being forgetful is sad in itself and if the state of your forgetfulness earns you the adjective 'tragic', then you certainly need attention.
Imagine a lady wakes in the morning, showers, puts on a well iron long sleeves that you could easily guess she is a banker working at Guarantee Trust Bank. She hangs a bow tie, sits in front of the mirror for 20 mins doing make-up. When she was done she stared at the mirror and the mirror itself, from the level of the make-up knew she was still single. When it was 8:00am, she picked up her bag and her suit which she just removed from the dry-cleaner's leather. On stepping outside, she felt like she was Chimamanda Adichie, simply because all eyes were fixed on her. She gave a cursory panoramic gaze at her horizon feeling proud of her make-up. A black tinted car zoomed by and stopped just before her. For a second she thought her beauty attracted whoever it was that was sitting inside that 'money'. But before he could wind down the glass to speak with her, she saw her reflection on the vehicle; she had forgotten to put on a skirt!
Hmm! So much for forgetting. The highest level and saddest sort of forgetfulness is forgetting to thank God for the wonders he has done, is doing and will do for us. If you claim ignorance, may I remind you that the highest gift God has given every individual is the gift of salvation and pragmatically, the gift of waking-up in the morning just beside your very sad pillow (the gift of life).
God, give us the grace to always remember the wonderful works you do in our lives. Amen.
This is my opinion, I am open to comments, contributions and corrections.
