I have been accused of doing many things and of 'being many things. One of those accusations is that I hold Heideggerian Ontology very close to my heart; always thinking and writing on "nothingness" (death). I plead guilty to this accusation. There are various ends which are means to other ends says Aristotle, on of those ends is what I speak of in this paper.
Those various ends vary, in fact, everything is characterised by an end. This makes 'end' the Highest Common Factor (HCF) of life's statistics. The 'end' I speak of here is not the end of life, but I speak of the end of Nollywood movies (Nigerian films).
Before I engender properly into the discourse, I will like to tender my sincere apology to Nollywood fans; most especially those who are sozzled at the sight of it. My intention is to expose and pursue an objective truth on the subject. But since the exposé is coming from one who has 'affects', I will have to use the reformed phenomenological approach proposed by Martin Heidegger as against Edmund Husserl's eidetic reduction (phenomenological epoché).
When clouds gather, we predict a down pouring of rain; when an individual is looking dirty and on his way with a hoe and machete, we say he is coming from the farm; when we see a man with a black gown and wig on his head, we say he is a lawyer; peep into a car and see a stethoscope we say the car belongs to a doctor. In the same vein, when you see certain actors in a Nollywood movie, you predict the story and you are 80% sure that you will get it right. It is possible that the reason why Nollywood movies seem so predictable is because the caste and story line is situated within our country; thus the mental framework is common to us all. This is arguable!
But one fascinating thing about Nollywood movies is the note written at the close of the shoot cotton: TO GOD BE THE GLORY! Sadlly, before this note comes up, the disk must have been removed or the channel changed. I seldom watch Nollywood movies. I watch only when I am mandated by necessity; only when I have to fulfil a social demand: remain with the people. During one of those 'foist' times, I was confronted by the note: To God be the Glory. It got me thinking: what should be to my glory after a job well done? After all my work, I will say, 'to God be the glory', what about my own glory?
I lately came to realize that God is always involved. While in secondary school, towards my final years, I read scrupulously as though my life depended on it. When we wrote exams and results were published, I was no where to be found. Others who read less, in my judgment, had their names chanted like psalms sung after a great victory gained. Indeed, everything we do, our struggles, our skills, talents and laurels are a THEANDRIC achievement and since God made us, al glory goes to Him.
For everything I was, everything I am and everything I will be:
TO GOD BE THE GLORY
