[NYC Diary | 뉴욕 이모저모] 차 없는 날! 브로드웨이 - Car Free NYC 2017

4/22 “차없는 날: 지구의 날” 워크숍을 하였습니다.
한달전이지만 좋은 이벤트인것 같아 소개해드립니다.
브로드웨이 / Broadway, the Spine of NYC streets
브로드웨이는 맨하탄의 중심부로 가로지르는 척추와 같은 도로 입니다.
지구의 날을 기념하여 아침 7시부터 오후 4시까지 뉴욕 교통부에서 브로드웨이의 차량을 통제해 차도를 자유롭게 사용할 수 있었습니다. 타임스퀘에서 유니언스퀘어 광장까지 1.7miles/2.7Km쯤 되는 구간입니다.

For those who don't know, we co-hosts of Hansik House also have a cultural development company – Base 15 Studio. We work closely with non-profits and cultural institutions to plan public programs and maximize creative impact for community groups.
One of our most recent temporary projects was an invitation by the Department of Transportation (DoT) in New York to hold a workshop for Earth Day. During the event, the DoT closed off one of New York's most heavily trafficked streets, Broadway to allow creative professionals to present work and hold small-scale engagement events.
지구의날 워크숍 / Earth Day Workshop
빈 차도는 “지구의 날” 교육 공간으로 사용되었습니다. 동료들과 함께 이날 “도시 조경 디자인/Urban Landscape Design Workshop”을 제공했습니다.
지나가던 어른들과 아이들이 호기심에 참여하고. 도시 디자인에대해 배웁니다. 사람, 나무와 벤치 자석을 이리저리 옮기며 아이들이 스스로 공간을 디자인 하는 놀이를 해봅니다.
For the workshop, we set up a table with metal panels. On the panels, we had laser-cut pieces of basic landscape elements – trees, bushes, river elements, etc. - with cut outs of people as well. Visitors were invited to play around with the elements, imagining how they come up with their ideal public space and in which ways they would like to see their own neighborhood transform.
차대신 사람
원래 브로드웨이는 맨하탄이 숲이였을 때 원주민들이 사용하던 길을 따 만들어진 도로라고 합니다. 2년 전 이 차도를 아예 "보행자 전용 산책로/Greenway"혹은 도로 공원으로 바꾸어버리자는 제안이 있었습니다. 비현실적인 콘셉같지만 뉴욕 교통부에서는 일부 구간을 실제로 “차없는 브로드웨이”로 궁극적으로 구현하려고 하기 위해 이것 저것 시도해 보고있습니다.
자동차에게 땅을 양보하는것이 너무 당연해진 우리에게 도로가 도심속 보행자와 자전거를 위한 “공간”으로써 어떻게 사용될 수 있는지 와일드한 상상을 해봅니다.

It was an incredibly engaging experience despite the horrid weather that day. Kids loved it, free to mess around as they chose with colorful elements and they seemed to feel empowered by this new responsibility. The whole affair reminded me of how important it is to always consider the impact of your work on a public, no matter how small. The biggest impact you can make is for the people who can most use that impact.

This is so neat, I can't believe I missed something like this. There's always something fun to explore in New York City. Although there is so much pollution around, this is a nice sight to see, thanks! @hansikhouse
Hi @kajalpats! Yeah, it is crazy how many events are popping up in NYC with such a short notice. We will be sure to let you guys know next time when we do an activity like this!
차 없이 살아갈 수 없는 미국에서
차 없는 도로를 이렇게 추진하는 모습을 보며
선진국이 괜히 선진국이 아니라는 생각이 듭니다.
돈을 많이 벌어서 그런것이 아니고
그 구성원들 사고의 수준이 선진국이네요

기존 인프라를 갖고 어떻게 다르게 사용해볼까 생각해보고 추진하는 사람들이 많은 것 같습니다.
네 말씀하신데로 돈이 중요한것 보다 생각하는 방식인것 같습니다. "what if....?" , "만약에... 이렇게 해보면?" 생각하는 방법이 다양한 아이디어를 새로운 기회로 보게해주고 도시가 더 독특해지는 것 같습니다.
