브루클린 덤보에서열린 일일장 입니다: Lightfoot Market

A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to be part of the first opening of the Lightfoot Market in Dumbo, a post-industrial sector at the southwest edge of Brooklyn, right at the south end of the Brooklyn Bridge. The market is a new concept, focused completely on new and innovative sustainable industries.

친환경, 사회 기여하는 브랜드, Eco-Friendly & Conscious Lifestyle Brands

“의식적 소비, 낭비 0”라는 테마였습니다. 다양한 사회적 미션을 가진 브랜드, 소비 패러다임을 바꾸고자하는 의도에서 만들어진 독특한 제품들을 만나 볼 수 있었습니다.

테이블 마다 아이콘을통해 어떻게 친환경적인가 한 눈에 알아볼 수 있게 해둔 사인입니다. 지역상품, 수제, 재활용품, 공정무역 등…

Among the highlights were a number of companies that took sustainability to a whole new level. Rothy's produces women's shoes almost completely from plastic salvaged from the ocean. Right next us was Toast, a beer company that uses old bread from bakeries for the fermentation process. Needless to say, I have quite the number of tastings throughout the day...

Shokun: 소수민족 여성들이 만드는 제품을 공정무역을 통해 수입하고 파는 브랜드

“세계경제/자본주의”에서 제외되는 개발도상국의 여성에게 경제적 자립을 도와주는게 이윤의 목적이라고. 하나만 있어도 부엌이 화사해 지는 아이템. 허나 가격이 생각보다 너무 비싸서 사지는 못했습니다.

Toast: 뉴욕시에서 잉여 생산된 빵들을 모아 맥주로 만드는 브랜드였습니다. 5$불 모금을 하고 시음을 할 수 있었습니다. 빵으로 만든 맥주…시원하고 독특한 맛!

좋았던 점: 젊은 기업인들이 자본주의 중심 생산 체제에 문제의식을 가지며 만들어낸 브랜드를 통해 시장이 형성되고 소비자층이 생기는 “밀레니어들의 신경제”를 경험한 기분이였습니다.

아쉬웠던 점: 물건들이 대부분 소량생산 이거나 수제품인 관계로 가격이 매우 비쌌습니다. 대중들이 공정무역, 친환경적인 제품들의 시장을 부담없는 가격으로 만나 보기엔 아직 이른지 않나 싶습니다.

After being in New York for almost a year now, it never ceases to amaze me how these self-initiated efforts continuously come about and really help define parts of the city. Summer is always the most productive time of the year in this place and I'm excited to explore and present the happenings around me!
