Life Or Profits

That's literally the choice we have to make, and we have to make it quickly. I'm sure you're all aware of the warning given to us by climate experts: we have until 2030 to reverse global warning. This means we have until 2030 to decide if we want to keep capitalism alive or not.

Unfortunately there are only a small number of people who want to face this choice, who are even aware that this is the only choice to make. There's no denying that climate change is caused by our economic and industrial system. I'm not going to spend a whole lot of words explaining that; if by now you're not able to see as much for yourself, you haven't been paying attention. But fear not; there's always my previous posts from which you can pick almost any one to read up on this fact. Also you could simply watch the video linked at the end of this post; it's a beautiful presentation of an American born in the 1980s, who grew up in suburbia and tells how he experienced his time growing up, and how he slowly got to realize that none of the promises made by capitalism are true. I'll quote two sentences that summarize the content perfectly, and then I'll shut up to let you watch the video.

"The whole selling point of capitalism is that profit drives innovations, as innovations drive profits, and the kinds of innovations that lead to profits, are exactly what lead to global climate change; make more stuff, plan obsolescence into that stuff so that people will buy that stuff more often, make that stuff as cheaply as possible, use the cheapest materials, spend billions on marketing so people will buy stuff they don't really need. This mindset is what's killing our planet, and this mindset is capitalism."

Most wars are caused by this capitalist mindset too. It's hard to admit to being wrong. We were wrong. As a society of modern people, we are wrong, and have been wrong for a long time now. I've said it a thousand times, but it still needs repeating: the same ideology that produces billionaires, the system that produces the role-models so many hope to become someday, is the system that's killing us, literally. We may have only 10 years left to do something about it, but the actual effects of climate change will become apparent in the year 2100. The selfishness at the core of the capitalist ideology translates into the generational selfishness that becomes apparent by our collective inaction; we won't be around when all goes to hell... That's hard to admit too, but it's only common sense; hundreds of years living under a generally accepted ideology that rewards selfishness could have no other outcome... Voting Bernie Sanders into office would only be a tiny first step in the right direction; it's not going to be easy on any of us. Okay, enough unpleasantly confronting honesty from me for now. It's not a cheerful or pleasant watch, but please take the time to watch this; it's important.

Are we gonna frickin do something or what

So you believe in "climate change"? (The climate is and was always changing - forever - it's a chaotic, dynamic system - there were many warm and cold periods)
And you believe we have "capitalism" at the moment? (the key element of capitalism is free markets - atm we have corporatism, cuz the corporations decide, they got the money - even banks are corporations - everything they do is legal and okay cuz they decide what is legal and okay - that's called lobbyism)

greets

Yes, I believe in climate change; there's no way for me to know for sure, and I do leave open the possibility that it's not real, but Pascal's Wager is applicable here, which is that it's safe to just assume it's real. My opinion on capitalism is a lot stronger because I, and anyone else, know enough about economics to recognize capitalism when I see it, when I live it. What you call corporatism IS capitalism; if you believe in free markets, you should re-read history . There is no such thing as a free market, there never was and there never will be. With that being said, "markets" are not exclusive to capitalism and is not capitalism's main feature. Capitalism is a model of production in which the classes are separated by the ownership of the means of production. Capitalists own the means of production and form the modern day minority that exploits the labor of the working majority; this means that capitalism is simply the continuation of slavery and feudalism, the previous models in which the same minority exploited the labor of the working majority. The government doesn't rule, the capitalists that have always owned the government rule.

So, climate change I choose to believe is real, capitalism I know is real.
