Welcome to our lil homestead - WizStead 1st Post

in #homesteading6 years ago

I'm 5th generation from the people who were land granted this land by the US government back in 1860's.

  • That means my grandkids are 7th generation.

This is a pic of my mom (Louise) and her family.

  • Everyone made it except my brother who lives in New Jersey,
so mom is holding up a picture of him...
    • She was raised on this farm.
    • Her mom (Opal) & dad (Virgil Hamilton) (my grandma & grandpa) bought the south part of this farm in the 1930's.

house barn all family.jpg

We're standing in front of the barn my grandpa built.

  • There used to be a cheese factory in the town about 10 miles west of here.
    • So grandpa always had milk cows, as long as I can remember.
  • He also raised
    • beef cows. Mainly Herefords.
    • pigs
    • sheep
    • chickens, peacocks, guineas and even a couple of turkeys
  • He row cropped corn, soybeans and wheat.
  • He would make hay.

Grandma & Grandpa were both born in 1900 and lived until about 1980
so can you imagine all the new technology they saw in their lifetime?

  • They got electricity here sometime in the 1940's.
    • Indoor plumbing after that.
  • There's an old rusted 1931 Model A out in one of the ditches.
I'm not sure when they got that.
  • Grandpa farmed with a John Deere "B" tractor. It's still in the machine shed.

I have lots of good memories on the farm growing up.

  • playing with all my cousins.
    • Whew! the huge meals we had on holidays were amazing!
      • I learned how to hunt and fish on this farm.

But, I am most excited to be back on the farm making new memories.

This is a pic of my wife Sylvia, Mom and me.

You can see the old house, mulberry tree and smoke house in the background.

  • They all had to be bulldozed down.
    • The house was built and the tree planted in 1900 by my great uncle.
      • It took 3 people to reach around the tree.
        It was huge.
But it finally split in half, so had to be removed.
    • The smoke house used to be someone's house.
      • 12 people lived in that lil 1 room with a loft building.

Out with the old... In with the new...

We moved this doublewide 200+ miles to be our new home.

House is set.jpg

To the left, you can see a white pine I planted 20 some years ago when I was living here.

  • When the mulberry tree split it really did a number on this tree, but I think we can save it.
  • That hunk of concrete was the front porch of the old house.
    • The front porch used to be the most important "room" of a home.

We got moved in Jan. 1st of this year.

  • We still have lots of work to do:
    • an open front and enclosed back porch to put on.
    • a garden to rebuild
    • a yard to seed
    • repair the outbuildings
    • cut down trees & shrubs
    • build some fences & outbuildings like a chicken coop
      • I would like to raise a few Highland cattle...

Let the adventure begin!

A note to my Facebook friends and family

I'll be linking to this post on Facebook...

Steemit is a new social network platform
that pays you to post, like and comment original content.

  • I look for this to replace Facebook and other social networks in the near future.
    • I'll be transitioning to posting mainly here.
      • Facebook has never paid me a dime for over 7 years of content I've posted there.
In fact, they've made a fortune off people like you and me using their program.
  • It's a different type of platform than Facebook.
    • It's not really about sharing other people's content, though you can do a bit of that...
      • It's more about sharing your original content (writings, photos, videos...)

To my hunting and fishing friends

  • who post pics and tell stories of their hunting and fishing adventures
    • you can do that here, too and maybe make a lil $.
    • Facebook didn't pay me anything for the same content back when I shared our adventure there...
  • Treve I bet people would love to see and hear about your blackpowder monster and all those crappie!
    • JP, people would pay good money to see and hear about your monster catfish!
      • Tyler, Wes, George you could make some change when people read and see about your hunting adventures...

To my talented musician friends.
(Janie, Patricia and others should do this...)

  • You can upload your music to https://dsound.audio/
    • You can upload your videos to https://d.tube/ which I look to overtake YouTube in the very near future.
      • And who knows, maybe make a lil $...

To my photographer and video maker friends.

  • You can upload pics and maybe make a lil $...
  • Bill I bet your astro pics would be quite a hit here
    • Jason travel pics are popular...
      • Sharing photos is one of the biggest money makers on this platform right now.
  • Tina, you should post your videos here as well as Facebook.
    • It's a simple step that could add new customers and followers to your business adventure...

To my Liberty & Freedom minded friends

  • We need you here sharing your common sense.
    • You can share your ideas with the entire world.
I've met people here from all over the world.
      • We hold these truths...
        isn't just for Americans...
it applies to everyone on this, the 3rd rock from the sun.

To my cryptofriends (Chris and others)
...and those wishing they could get into cryptocurrency, but don't like the risk...

  • There is a LOT of crypto info available here....
    • STEEM is one of the highest traded cryptos on the market.
      • You earn free STEEM by posting, commenting and liking content.

Will you get rich?

  • I dunno.
    • This really isn't a get-rich-quick scheme.
      • Even if you only make pennies,
it's more than any other social network has ever paid you!!!
  • I've been here 24 days and my wallet's estimated worth is $75+
  • It's not about the money anyway.
    • It's about not having to put up with
      • all those ads.
      • censorship & disappearing posts
      • random changes to the platform that you have no control over

Come on over and give http://steemit.com a try.
It:

  • connects people to people
    • and
  • connects people to information
Sort:

Your 39 cent post payout was actually worth 63 cents USD at today's prices due to the way payouts are divided 50/50 Steem Backed Dollar (SBD)/Steem. See this post for a detailed explanation.

I wasn't at all complaining! 39 cents is 39 cents more than I've ever made posting on any other social network... 63 cents is way better than 39 though...

  • Thanks for linking to that post!
    • That is VERY informative.
      • Off the top of my head, I see no reason to peg this currency to the failed fiat USD.
Well, it's actually been very successful to the private owners of the Federal Reserve.
Unfortunately, it's failed it's stated purpose which is to control inflation...
  • I have to go back and study that info a bit. and follow the links you have there...
    • Thanks again!

Great reply. I knew you were not complaining! ;) Glad you found the post helpful!

Super cool! 😎 Thanks!!!

Wait until you see some of these stories!!!

  • a monster nearly 100# catfish out of the Missouri River
    • He's also hunts deer & turkey and traps
  • 19 point whitetail - 5th in nation for non-typical black powder
    • He's also caught 3 pound crappie!
  • Champion coon dogs
    • I so hope they take the bait and jump on board...!!!...

I invited a young man from Africa today to start using the tag.

  • He had caught a nice catfish on light tackle...
    • My main incentive is so I can see their stories in my feed...

  • Greatly appreciated!

I really enjoyed your post @wizardave! Reading it reminded me of my own childhood. My mother grew up on a dairy farm that had been in her father's side of the family since shortly before the Civil War.
I still have fond memories of climbing the outside ladder on the twin grain silos that are at least 100 feet high by sight measure. I'll try to post some pics of them soon. The farm hasn't been operational for about 30 years and most of it has been swallowed up by Kudzu.
The stock market crash of 1929 wiped out many small farmers and forced people back into the cities in order to keep working. My great-grandparents struggled a good bit but they survived due to their resiliency and knowledge of living off the land. This is what most people in the world are cut off from today and it's exactly what we have to get back to if we are to survive what's to come! Looking forward to following you and your families Adventure...

Thanks @mindszai

  • looking forward to your post about all that!
    • I wish we could get back to 40 acres and a mule, rather than all the corporate farmers making millions through subsidies!

When hand milking into a bucket grandpa could shoot a stream I bet 10 feet or so right into a cat's mouth standing in the doorway!

  • And that fresh milk made THE BEST homemade ice cream!
    • And talk about a great bowl of cereal!
+Oh wow, did you ever put some on fresh sliced peaches?!?!?
      • Yes, lots of good memories...
  • Looking forward to your post!

Welcome to Steemit! Great post and an even better story. I really wish I could have got the old homeplace that my grandparents had but it was not in the cards for me, so I am making my own. Steem On!

Thanks @basicstoliving

  • I look forward to reading your posts.
    • No time tonight, but I did scroll down your blog ...
